Resident Evil Zero Might Be Made Into A Movie So Screen Gems Doesn’t Lose Its Rights To The Franchise
Resident Evil 4 Remake Has Sold Over 9 Million Units Worldwide
Capcom has announced that the Resident Evil 4 remake has now sold over nine million units globally.
The last Resident Evil movie,Welcome to Raccoon City, was released in 2021. In 2026, Screen Gems could lose the rights to the horror gaming franchise if they don’t release a new movie. With that context in mind, Dusk Golem posted a series of tweets explaining the situation:
(1/6) So here’s some educated speculation, but it IS speculation, on how I personally believe Resident Evil stuff is going to go down in the next couple years.
So Screen Gems/Constantin Films have a contract that to retain the rights to the Resident Evil brand for film making,

Simple enough to understand, but with further tweets, he gets into more detail:
(2/6) they need to release a new Resident Evil film every 5 years (fiscal). So the new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger that starts filming pretty soon basically needs to release before fiscal year 2026 is up, since Welcome to Raccoon City released in 2021.
(3/6) heavily rumored/leaked this film is an adaption of Resident Evil Zero, with Rebecca & Billy starring in it.
The Switch successor is also on the cusp of being revealed, likely released this year. I think it’s highly likely that Capcom will strike a marketing deal w/Nintendo
In the three tweets featured here, Dusk Golem also revealed Resident Evil Zero would follow the characters of Billy and Rebecca, and Zach Creggars plans to begin filming soon. If all of this is true, confirmations should come in the following days or weeks.
Zach Cregger’s Barbarian Makes Him The Perfect Directing Choice
In 2022, twenty years after Resident Evil Zero came out on Gamecube,Barbarianhit theaters. Written and directed by Zach Creggers, the horror/thriller/home invasion nightmare rocked critics and audiences. The movie also showed thatThe Whitest Kids You Knowalum was a name to watch in horror, and now his biggest break could be on the way.
Barbarian, as of this writing, has a 92% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes with a 71% fresh audience score. Noted for its tense atmosphere and ability to turn classic horror tropes on their heads, it shows Cregger could be the perfect director to resurrect the slumping Resident Evil movie franchise.
What Went Wrong With The Resident Evil Movies?
After a first movie that balanced horror and action, the Milla Jovovich-led franchise quickly devolved into Mad Max wannabe action films. Subsequent animated and live-action shows on Netflix also failed to capture the magic of the games.
Now, after over 20 years, will Screen Gems finally get it right with Resident Evil Zero? I guess that depends on if the rumors are true or not. At least the games are still going strong, withResident Evil 9 on the way any day now.
