Launched in 2003,NCISis one of the few shows that has consistently drawn in crowds from every section of the world, giving birth to five spin-off shows and countless seasons. The CBS procedural series has been forever entrenched in our pop culture dictionary due to its enduring presence in television history.

For a show of such magnitude, the awards consideration alone would be too huge a number to think of. However, unfortunately for the series and its producers,NCIShas never been lucky enough to snag a Primetime Emmy – the greatest of all award recognitions in the realm of television entertainment.

The enduring legacy and popularity ofNCIS

In the years since its launch, the CBS procedural seriesNCIShas achieved an impossible feat by establishing a steady television presence that has endured among shifting demographics and changing times. Throughout the past 22 years, the series has maintained a stalwart presence among its devoted fanbase who have not yet stirred in their timeless love for the series.

Amid a litany of crime and legal procedurals that dot the pop culture space, only a handful such asSuitsandCSIhave been able to achieve that level of fandom and devoted following. The legacy ofNCISis such that fans of the series have credited itslack of complicated plotand the somewhat comforting familiarity attached to its police procedural setting for its growing popularity.

Surprisingly, however,NCISitself was created as a spin-offof another CBS series calledJAGwhich ran for 10 seasons until 2005. Now,NCIShas given rise to five other spin-offs, includingNCIS: Originwhich is a prequel focusing on a young Gibbs,NCIS: Los Angeles,NCIS: New Orleans,NCIS: Hawai’i, and the latest titledNCIS: Sydneywhich launched in November 2024.

NCISstill fights for recognition from the Emmys

As a popular series with such a huge reach,NCISremains one of the rare few shows on earth that has never been touched by an Emmy’s glory. Quite understandably, the show’s co-creator and producer, Don McGill remains stung by the fact every time he is reminded of it.

Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporteron the show’s 20th anniversary in an oral history recap, McGill said,“I don’t think it’s necessarily the kind of show that was out to get awards. It was really a show that was out to get eyeballs, so I’m not surprised that it wasn’t ever really in Emmy consideration.”While that may be true, it still doesn’t explain why the Emmys never considered it.
