Former One Direction member and singer-songwriter Liam Payne passed away on October 16. According to reports, the singer fell down from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires. While the investigation regarding the cause of his death is still ongoing, many news sites reportedly received flack for sharing photos of the deceased singer.

One of Payne’s most identifying physical attributes was his tattoos which filled his arms. The singer recounted in an interview the stories behind many of his tattoos. The singer spoke about one tattoo in length, which he had reportedly received while he was drunk and was too scared to tell the tattoo artist that it was too long.

Payne’s most recognizable feature have been his tattoos. The singer’s arms are filled with art, which he has since mentioned holds special meanings. Payne also mentioned that it was almost an addiction, as after the first tattoo he received on his ankles, he kept looking at his body and imagined how to fill up the space.
While the singer seemed to have meaning to many of his tattoos, one in particular stood out because it was an impulse buy. In an interview withGQ, theWhat Makes You Beautifulsinger revealed that he had gone out shopping and had ended up at the tattoo parlor a bit drunk and asked the artist to draw a chevron on his forearm. He said,

Then I literally woke up the next morning in a little bit of a haze, not really remembering what was going on. But I knew my arm was really hurting, and I was like, ‘Aw, no’. And then I was like, having flashbacks of what happened the night before, and I looked down at my arm and I was like, ‘Oh my God’. And this was the only tattoo I ever googled, like, ‘How do you remove tattoos?’
The singer also mentioned that he had come to like the tattoos and saw them as stories to be told. He also mentioned that the chevron ended up being the logo of his clothing line with Hugo Boss.

It’s like on my leg here, there’s like a little cross on my ankle. And a cross on the other ankle. Screw your legs to your feet, so it keeps you grounded, or whatever. It was something stupid. But we got these things. It was like, I thought I’d start at the ankle.

Payne reportedly also got another tattoo that said ‘Everything I wanted but nothing I’ll ever need,’ which he said was inked when he was enjoying his level of success, fame, and stardom but realized that it was not what he wanted.
