The last few years haven’t been the brightest for the Brahma Bull in Hollywood, especially after failing to change the hierarchy of power in the DCU, which got shortly canceled afterBlack Adam. But after theBlack Adamdebacle, Dwayne Johnson fell back to one of his most renowned roles to date in the sequel toMoana.

Although the sequel isn’t exactly on the same level as the original, which makes sense as it wasn’t originally supposed to be a movie, this isn’t hindering its box-office run, and Johnson has no plans of slowing down as Maui.
Moana 2Is Taking the Box Office Sea by Storm
Considering thatMoana 2was originally developed as a Disney Plus series, which ended up getting stretched into a feature-length movie, it’s nowhere near the original, which has cemented itself as a modern-day Disney classic. But this isn’t to say the movie doesn’t have its charms, and even though the music and the animation are definitely not on par with the 2016 release, this is certainly miles above Johnson’s other holiday project,Red One.
Moreover, in contrast toRed One, which has beenstruggling at the box office,Moana 2has proven to be a huge hit forDwayne Johnson, one which he desperately needed. With a collection of over $57.5M on its opening day domestically, including $13.8M from Tuesday previews,Moana 2has earned the third biggest opening for an animated movie, and the biggest for a Walt Disney Animation title.

Tribute or Nostalgia Bait? Dwayne Johnson’s Red One Reference to Bruce Willis’ $143M Blockbuster Could Be a Genius Trick
If its ascend at the box office continues, it could witness a five-day Thanksgiving record with a potential $175M (viaDeadline).
Dwayne Johnson Reflects on Bringing Maui to Live-Action
As for Johnson’s future as Maui, a live-action adaptation of the 2016 release is currently in development, which will see the Brahma bull return to his role as the demigod. Sharing his perspective on the prospect of bringing the character into the real world, the WWE superstar expressed that the whole experience was“eye-opening”, adding (viaExtra) “It was almost like getting in my grandfather’s skin“.
The moment I stepped on set as live-action Maui, I realized right away, ‘Oh, wow, this is different,’ in terms of this is real flesh-and-blood and skin-and-bones. It becomes real all of the sudden. It was almost like getting in my grandfather’s skin and what that was like.

Although time will tell what the future holds for Disney’s live-actionMoana, and in turn, Johnson’s Maui, keeping in mind that the original is only 8 years old, the constant barrage of remakes and sequels isn’t a good look for Disney.
