Minecraftis literally the most popular video game of all time, at least in terms of pure sales, so its wiki site is really quite an important archive of internet information, but there’s been a growing dissent among the editors who keep the site going, and this, as reported byPC Gamer, recently culminated in a vote in which the large majority of editors expressed their desire to leave.

The many complaints of the editors, as visible on theirpublic moving discussion, include Fandom’s “excessive ads,” popups that ask for the reader’s age, aggressive branding (such as the Fandom sidebar on the left of the screen), a poor mobile experience (mostly because of the ads), and an overall lack of freedom for editors.

The Minecraft wiki editors wouldn’t just abandon the franchise, of course. They plan “fork” to another website, which they’re more than allowed to do. The issue, however, as some of the editors pointed out, is that Fandom’s wiki is already established and is part of arguably the biggest Wiki network of them all, so it would be hard to compete with it in terms of visibility.

It’s likely many users would still go to the Fandom wiki out of habit, or would still get the Fandom page as the top result when searching for it.

Minecraft’s wiki on Fandom is also in several languages, and this would be exponentially difficult to recreate. With these factors in mind, there are some editors who don’t believe forking is worth it, however, the large majority still do, and are simply debating to which web hosting site they should migrate, wiki.gg and Bulbapedia being among the top options.
