One of Minecraft’s most iconic mods, The Aether, has returned in all of its glory. The mod was previously dormant for many years, only playable on much older versions ofMinecraft. Now, however, The Aether mod has been updated and is now playable on modern versions of Minecraft, such as Minecraft 1.19 and 1.20.
For those unaware, The Aether mod adds a whole new dimension to Minecraft. Simply grab some glowstone, construct a portal similar to a Nether portal, then activate it by placing a water bucket on it. A magical doorway to another dimension will then be right at your fingertips. This new dimension adds a plethora of new blocks, mobs, and even dungeons for players to conquer.

Would you like some Minecraft with your Minecraft?
Until yesterday, The Aether mod hadn’t been updated since 2021, when it was only playable on Minecraft 1.12. Although the mod is now being updated once again by the original team, a key member, known as Kingbdogz, washired by Mojang Studios back in 2019. The rest of The Aether team says they have now “recreated and remastered the mod for 1.19.2, 1.19.4, and 1.20.1.”

Minecraft’s Most Iconic Mod Returns
On December 22nd, 2023, the original Aether mod team took to the Minecraft subreddit to announce the return of the mod. With almost 9,000 upvotes at the time of writing, it’s fair to say the mod’s return was met with open arms by the community.
The mod is completely free to download and is now compatible with Minecraft 1.19.2, 1.19.4, and 1.20.1. If you want to try out the mod for the first time, or experience a sweet nostalgia hit, you may download the mod at eitherModrinthorCurseForge.

When asked by a fan why the team decided to recreate Aether 1 and not Aether 2, one of the creators replied by saying, “Aether 1 is our most popular project and getting it updated and fixed up is our first priority. We are going to be resuming work on Aether II following this release though. And recreating Aether 1 first makes working on Aether II far easier as a lot of the skeleton of the project is now already functional and can be reused.”
So for fans patiently waiting for a modern version of Aether 2, it looks like the team is already hard at work on its release.
