All of Jiraiya’s students inNarutowere extraordinary, including Konan. Despite her fewer appearances in comparison, she demonstrated impressive strength and brilliance. To this day, she remains a fan-favorite character and her fight against Obito is forever imprinted in fans’ memories. As masterful as she was against Obito, her fight against Jiraiya was lackluster in comparison.
Jiraiya revealed the obvious gaps in her powers that could easily render her strongest attacks useless. This makes one wonder about the insane hype surrounding the character and how her powers somewhat fail to live up to it.
The contrast between Konan’s fight against Obito and Jiraiya
The Konan vs. Obito fight inNaruto Shippudenwas an electrifying showdown. Konan anticipated a potential fight against Obito and had already prepared the battlefield. Her preparations had started long before that, as she even observed and studied Obito’s abilities during her time with the Akatsuki.
What made the fight so thoroughly entertaining and mind-blowing for fans was Konan’s final attack. She kept up with his attacks and landed some deadly ones of her own. She used billions of explosive tags that were supposed to keep detonating for almost 10 minutes, surpassing the time limit of Obito’s Kamui. That was a brilliant move on her part.

Her planning made all the difference against Obito, but the same preparation would not have worked against Jiraiya, as one Reddit comment points out.
During the infiltration of Amegakure, Konan had a brief spar with Jiraiya. It was possibly one of the worst matchups for her, as the opponent was her former master. As a result of training her, Jiraiya already knew all the basic information about her powers.
There was also a significant difference in their power levels. Yet,what left Konan somewhat defenselessagainst Jiraiya was her own shortcomings.
Konan’s ability was never strong enough to defeat Obito
Jiraiya used oil release and fire release that weakened Konan as her element is basically paper. Just like fire and oil, most elements have an advantage over her main weapon, i.e. paper ninjutsu.Knowing how useless her ability can be at times, the huge difference between her and Obito somewhat dampens the effect of the fight we have loved for all this time. Had Obito been somewhat strategic or prepared during that fight, he would have won that fight without working that hard.
At the same time, while her abilities alone are not that impressive, the way she puts them to use is commendable. She accounted for her weaknesses against Obito and had prepared a massive attack just in case, which nearly helped her in defeating him. Jiraiya described her perfectly during the final face-off, she was “one hell of a kunoichi”, a meticulous planner who knew how to best use her abilities.
