The excitement and enthusiasm of theCastlevaniafans, which has significantly raised after the franchise’s crossover withDead Cells, is motivating for Konami. Assistant producer Tsutomu Taniguchi said the company is proud that Castlevania had such an impact on Dead Cells.

Speaking to IGN, Taniguchi acknowledged that the buzz was really encouraging for Konami, saying, “Seriously, knowing that Dead Cells, which is among the greatest indie games of the past ten years, was inspired by Castlevania is a huge source of pride for us.” He also added, “When Evil Empire and Motion Twin came back with their full-DLC proposition instead of just this short featuring we weren’t really surprised, and we were hoping for that to be honest. And we just thought we had to let them go full circle because we knew they would use every ounce of their talent to honor the franchise.”

Taniguchi claimed that even though developmen team members tried to bring back the Castlevania games in the form of different collections and mobile titles, they were never satisfied. That also made the crossover with Dead Cells impossible to pass up on. The developer did not give an indication of future Castlevania projects, but the enthusiasm of the fan base is motivating for Konami, so there remains a possibility that new Castlevania games are under consideration. Fans can also expect Konami to revive the franchise with new crossover events.

Evil Empire chief operating officer Benjamin Laulan also claimed that Castlevania and Dead Cells share a few similar elements, which paved the way for their pitch to turn into a full DLC proposition. “Back in France, we started working on it and well, since Dead Cells had ‘respectfully stolen’ so many elements from the series already, such as: the whip, the key art with the castle, the food hidden in walls…” Laulan said, “It just made sense to continue this way, so we got lost in the excitement and went all-in.”

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC launched back on May 6, bringing a range of playable content including Alucard, Richard Belmont, new enemies, weapons, biomes, alternative soundtracks, plus new bosses and outfits. Players are tasked with decimating Dracula to stop his destruction plan.
