Heal Your Wounds

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, you don’t heal between stages or worlds, but you’re often given the ability toheal up before a boss fight. You’ll want to be at full health, especially if you’re trying to tackle this fight in Wild Mode. King Dedede isn’t a pushover, so be sure Kirby isn’t, either. As you make your way up to King Dedede’s Castle, you’ll see ashining tomato with a big “M” on it to the left.Scoop up this tomato, and you’ll be back into boss-clobbering shape. Now, you can prepare for the big fight.

Choose Your Copy Ability

Normally, Kirby would show up to a boss fight with whichever ability he used last. However, at this point, you should have Waddle Dee town unlocked. This means you can go back to Waddle Dee town and select any ability you would like to take into the fight. While you certainly don’t have to take advantage of this, you may like to if you have an ability that is your favorite or if an ability has potentially evolved through upgrades. If you don’t have an ability equipped (or you would like to choose a new one), there are four outside the castle for you to choose from.

Always choose the ability you think is going tosuit your playstylebest. King Dedede doesn’t have a particular weakness to any of these abilities, so you’ll find them all to be fairly balanced and viable if you’re skilled with the one you’re using.

Kirby And The Forgotten Land: Kirby Sits In Front Of Copy Abilities

Remember that if you’re struck hard enough, your copy ability will be stripped from you and float nearby. You’ll have abrief moment to recover the ability. If you cannot recover it, you’ll have to rely on the stars left behind by King Dedede’s attacks. As with all the bosses, these stars can be sucked up and shot back at the boss for a moderate amount of damage.

The first phase of this fight is fairly straightforward. King Dedede has three moves he likes to rotate between.

Kirby And The Forgotten Land: King Dedede Chases Kirby

He will run andchase you with his hammer. If you slow down, he will slam his hammer in an attempt to hit you. For this moment, when he’s paused, you might be able to sneak in a hit or two. This is also true when he takes a big swipe at you with the hammer, leaving a circle of stars around him.

His second big move is a body slam where he’ll charge forward very quickly. It’s hard to avoid this attack, so consider guarding against it.

Kirby And The Forgotten Land: King Dedede Charges Kirby

Finally, his third attack is a ground pound, which creates a damaging ring that will spread out from his body. He often does this movethree times in a row, with the third strike being delayed. You can avoid it by floating out of his way.

This is the phase where Kind Dedede will trade his hammer for an entire pillar. He will often charge up an attack that smashes and breaks the ground, allowing dangerous ice to spring up from the cracks in the floor. Hovering is going to be a key strategy during this phase of the fight.

Kirby And The Forgotten Land: King Dedede Slams The Ground

You’ll most likely find it difficult to get close to King Dedede during this stage. When you do, he will strike and swipe with the pillar. These attacks are easier to guard against rather than dodge. Once you get the hang of his movements, strike him between attacks until he is eventually defeated! If you find yourself continuing to have a tough time, considerrecruiting a friend for some co-op. While the Waddle Dee companion isn’t as formidable as Kirby, they can still help.

Clear The Board

Now that you’ve defeated King Dedede, you might consider taking on some extra challenges to save additional Waddle Dees. To save the Waddle Dees, follow the mission objectives for the stage.

There’s no question about it -these challenges are tough. Just remember that you can return to these fights at any time. If you find them frustrating, take a break and return later. As you play the game, Kirby can continue to evolve his copy abilities, making him stronger and stronger. You may decide to come back witha fully evolved abilityready to take on King Dedede.
