Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: 15 Essential Beginner Tips
Henry’s big fall means he’s just as weak in KCD2 as in the first game, but these perks will help immensely.
One such potentially confusing thing to figure out is as simple as how to use your torch. If you’re struggling to figure out how to actually equip and use your torch, you’re definitely not alone.

Even worse, torches are essential to your survival in Kingdom Come. Not only are they mandatory for being able to see anything at all after dark, but guards in towns will also threaten and arrest you if you’re wandering around at night without one.
Let’s keep Henry on the right side of the law and learn how to use that pesky torch.

Acquiring A Torch
Torches are plentiful throughout KCD2. The earliest one you’re able to grab is on the corpse of the “dead bastard” during theFortuna main story quest. Loot his body before you help Bozhena bury it, and you’ll find a torch free for the taking.
Finding torches on corpses you can loot is a running theme from here. Nearly every enemy you kill in this game will have one that you can claim for your own upon their defeat.

Aside from looting corpses, torches can also be purchased from various merchants throughout the world. The earliest example of this is Merchant Jurg Thomel.
Head to the location in Troskowitz marked “Trader,” and you’re able to snag a torch from Jurg for a measly 4.8 Groschen.

Equipping Your Torch
From here, you simply need to head to your Inventory tab and locate the torch among all of your carried items. Your platform’s main command button (X on PS5, A on Xbox, E/Enter on PC) equips and unequips items, so press it, and the torch will be added to Henry’s currently held inventory.
If you’ve equipped the torch properly, you’ll see its icon to the right of Henry’s character model in the Inventory tab.

Using Your Torch
Back in the game, the torch is drawn by holding down on the d-pad/directional arrow of a controller, or by pressing R on your keyboard. While playing with a gamepad, when you hold d-pad down, you’ll notice a long-press meter fill at the bottom of the screen. When the meter is full, Henry will draw the torch. It will already be lit and never runs out of flame, so carry it around for as long as you need it.
Simply pressing down on the d-pad of your controller instead of holding it will just take you back to your Inventory menu, and Henry still will not have drawn the torch.
Henry will keep the torch drawn until you hold down on the d-pad or press R on your keyboard once again to put it away. Additionally, the torch can’t cause any damage or start any fires, so no need to worry about it burning anything down or accidentally damaging an NPC with it.
This same process is followed to draw your torch while on horseback.
Be cautious when getting into fights at night with your torch drawn. If you typically hold a shield in your left hand during combat, once your weapon is drawn, the drawn torch will take the place of your shield. It’s advised you put away your torch before a fight if you want to use your shield.
