Johnny Depp saved the life of his co-star fromSleepy Hollow
Set in the late 1700s,Sleepy Hollowwas a gothic horror movie in whichJohnny Deppportrayed the role of a New York City constable, Ichabod Crane who was sent to a place called Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of murders. Since the movie was set in the late 1700s, Depp’s character was also supposed to have a horse in the movie, therefore the actor learned horseriding right before the filming ofSleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane had a single-eyed Andalusian horse, Gunpowder in the movie.

According toIMDB, the horse whose name was Goldeneye was allegedly old and was all set to be put down after the production ofSleepy Hollowcame to an end. However, when Johnny Depp heard about this, he immediately decided to adopt the horse to save the life of his on-screen partner.

Johnny Depp once revealed in an interview withSPLICEDwirehow he took inspiration from legends of the industry like Roddy McDowell, Basil Rathbone, and Angela Lansbury while portraying the role of Ichabod Crane inSleepy Hollow. The actor also talked about his thought process after reading a script and how he tries to create a persona for his characters. He said,
“It’s funny, because what happens to me when I read a script, when something grabs hold of me, I start getting these flashes of people or places or things or images…With “Sleepy Hollow,” I was (after) the kind of drive that Basil Rathbone had as Sherlock Holmes, but what’s going on behind that is total and utter confusion. Basil Rathbone knew exactly what he was talking about. He hit in on every note. Ichabod would (seem to) hit it, but he would miss it, in fact.”

Sleepy Hollowhit the theatres on July 16, 2025, and was a massive success at the box office as it grossed almost $207 million worldwide against a production budget of $100 million. The movie also largely received positive reviews from critics and fans.
