The song in question was the remix version ofI’m Realwhich was written by rapper Ja Rule who also performed on the track. Soon after its release, the song created a stir as listeners heard Lopez use the N-word in the opening verse that was the derogatory slang to refer to African Americans.

Following this, many prominent writers and fans expressed their displeasure towards theGiglistar and questioned her tone-deafness regarding the same. Lopez though, who performed this track at the Rockefeller Center in theTodayshow, stood her ground firmly without apology. In a quote from the show (viaWashington Post), the celebrity explained her reasons behind defending herself and said,

“For anyone to think or suggest or say that I’m racist is really absurd and hurtful to me. I don’t want to get into it. I don’t want to give it too much energy. I’m here to perform for the fans, and that’s what I want to do.”

The singer also made everyone aware that the lyrics of the song was written by a Black rapper and was not meant to be hurtful or derogatory towards anyone.

While Lopez addressed this query, she refrained from commenting on other concerns from fans regarding her husbandBen Affleck’sdrinking, and how the launch of this brand of cocktail could be seen as a hypocritical business venture.
