In today’s world, any topic of sensitive nature can trigger emotions worldwide, especially if it has to do with religion or race. Singing and acting superstarJennifer Lopezexperienced this first hand when serious allegations regarding the usage of a controversial racial slur were made against her.
The song in question was the remix version ofI’m Realwhich was written by rapper Ja Rule who also performed on the track. Soon after its release, the song created a stir as listeners heard Lopez use the N-word in the opening verse that was the derogatory slang to refer to African Americans.

Following this, many prominent writers and fans expressed their displeasure towards theGiglistar and questioned her tone-deafness regarding the same. Lopez though, who performed this track at the Rockefeller Center in theTodayshow, stood her ground firmly without apology. In a quote from the show (viaWashington Post), the celebrity explained her reasons behind defending herself and said,
“For anyone to think or suggest or say that I’m racist is really absurd and hurtful to me. I don’t want to get into it. I don’t want to give it too much energy. I’m here to perform for the fans, and that’s what I want to do.”

The singer also made everyone aware that the lyrics of the song was written by a Black rapper and was not meant to be hurtful or derogatory towards anyone.

“I know that a lot of people have been talking about, ‘Oh, she doesn’t even drink, what’s she doing with a cocktail out?’ And to tell you the truth, that was true for a long time — I didn’t drink. A few years back, as you will see from several photos of me over the past 10, maybe 15 years, I have been having the occasional cocktail.”
While Lopez addressed this query, she refrained from commenting on other concerns from fans regarding her husbandBen Affleck’sdrinking, and how the launch of this brand of cocktail could be seen as a hypocritical business venture.
