Hollywood has witnessed many an iconic pairing on the silver screen, from Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart to more recent ones like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. But out of all these iconic pairs, one iconic couple keeps getting cast together and has worked in four movies together: Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.

The celebrated pairing of yesteryears, their romantic pairing is one of cinema’s most beloved, known for their undeniable chemistry. While Fonda certainly enjoyed working with the ever-so-dashing Redford, as per her revelation, he did not seem to have an equally good time with her or any other co-star as a matter of fact.

Jane Fonda Believes Robert Redford Has an Issue with Women

Jane FondaandRobert Redfordhave shared screens so many times as a romantic pair that one would think they enjoy working together. While Fonda certainly does enjoy working and sharing more than a few ‘romantic’ scenes with the Academy Award-winning actor, her co-star might not have had the same experience.

Although he has always been delightful and charming in press and public, Fonda revealed that her four-time leading man seems to have an issue with women. Back in 2023, while at the Cannes Film Festival, the actress got candid about working with her many co-stars and said the following about Redford (viaDeadline),

He did not like to kiss.I never said anything [to him about it]. And he’s always in a bad mood, and I always thought it was my fault.

Having shared the screen with him inThe Chase(1966),Barefoot in the Park(1967),The Electric Horseman(1979), andOur Souls at Night(2017), the actress believed she was the cause of her co-stars’ distress. However, after having worked with him in their last film, she learned a surprising truth:He’s a very good person. He just has an issue with women.

While she failed to elaborate further, she did remark later on how, despite everything she had always had a great time filming with him,

The last movie I made with him was six years ago [Our Souls at Night]. What was I, about 80 years old or something like that. And I finally knew I had grown up. When he would come on the set three hours late in a bad mood, I knew it wasn’t my fault. We always had a good time.

Although Redford has yet to reply to Jane Fonda’s unabashed remarks, it seems the two co-stars had more of a difference in nature and approach rather than Robert Redford being unnecessarily unkind.

Jane Fonda Loves Filming ‘Love’ Scenes with Robert Redford

While Robert Redford might apparentlyhave issues with working with ‘female’ co-stars, his four-time co-star Jane Fonda can’t seem to have enough of him. Despite acknowledging that he would often have a terrible mood on set and some days would not even talk to her, the actress has enjoyed acting alongside him.

Back in 2017, while onThe Ellen DeGeneres Show, she couldn’t help but remark about their movieOur Souls at Night,

Our Souls at Night, a Netflix film

There is eventually a love scene. ‘m happy with the love scene. I’m unhappy because it was so short!

Later, while pondering over the number of times she has shared a bed with him, Fonda gushed over how gorgeous her long-time co-star has been. Yet, in another appearance onThe Ellen DeGeneres Show, theBook Clubstar revealed that she only has one problem with working with Redford and it is as follows,

The only problem with working with Bob is I kind of look into his eyes and I kind of fall into his eyes and forget my dialogue.I realize that I’ve grown up because in the three previous movies, I was always in love with him. I fell in love with him every time.

And so, although Jane Fonda may have sometimes struggled with Robert Redford’s moods and his complex relationship with his female co-stars, she still cherishes the moments they shared on set and values the unique spark that made their scenes unforgettable. Despite their differences, the pair continue to have an enduring appeal and remain one of the most iconic pairings of all time.
