Therefore, as the tweet specifies, it’s likely that twice as many players have gotten their hands on this surprise 2021 hit.RELATED:It Takes Two Director Says Next Game Will Be “A Surprise In A Good WayIt Takes Two is Hazelight Studios' second title, and it follows the story of Cody and May, a soon-to-be-divorced couple who are turned into small dolls due to a wish by their grieving daughter. The pair must traverse through numerous environmental puzzles, platforming challenges, varying gameplay sequences, and even boss fights, as they simultaneously work through their relationship issues. The title received near-universal praise upon release, and it even ended up netting the Game of the Year award at the 2021Game Awardsshowcase.
Hazelight was founded by Lebanese-Swedish director Josef Fares, who has always had a passion for two-player cooperative titles. The team’s first game wasA Way Out, an action-adventure game where the players control a pair of newly acquainted inmates, who team up to escape from jail. Though the game was decently received and sold great (3.5 million units, as perIGN), it’s clear that It Takes Two was Hazelight’s true breakout performance, and it has cemented as one of the industry’s top-tier independent developers.
This success also proves that there is still a respectable demand for traditional co-op campaigns that are designed around two players playing together. Furthermore, there’s seemingly still demand for split-screen co-op campaigns where two players play locally on one console. Most modern titles often eschew local multiplayer modes, a recent prominent example beingHalo Infinite, which faced a lot ofbacklashdue to its abandoning of the split-screen co-op campaign the developers had previously promised.
