Christopher Nolan Talks About The Making OfInterstellar

Christopher Nolanspoke withNPRand shared howInterstellarwas inspired by many of his favorite childhood space films. Among his picks wereGeorge Lucas’Star WarsandSteven Spielberg’sClose Encounters of the Third Kind.

I got to do a lot of things in this film that I’ve been wanting to do since I was a kid. It’s a real, sort of, childhood dream of mine to do this film, and so I feel like I certainly got a lot of things out of my system.

“It’s not the sort of thing that I like to do”: Christopher Nolan Was Amazed by His Own Choice for Interstellar’s Most Devastating Scene

WhileInterstellaris mostly set in space, the director tried to make the story as grounded as possible. “I really wanted to look at this moment in time that may be coming one day, where mankind has to reckon with its place in the wider universe,” he explained. “I think for me it’s as much about contrast as balance.”

Of course, with everywork of fiction, there’s a slice of reality. Nolan worked with theoretical physicist Kip Thorne for consultation on the film. “It was mostly him saying, ‘Here are the possibilities of real-world science.’”

With his help, Nolan was able to realize that a person cannot travel faster than the speed of light. “He spent about two weeks just beating me down and explaining to me it’s absolutely not possible.”

Whatever the director was planning to do was perhaps a scene of epic proportions, but since they were trying to make the movie as realistic as possible, he had to rely on science.

Fans Show Enthusiasm ForInterstellar’s Re-release

With the news ofInterstellar’s re-release in theaters on 70mm and Imax, Nolan explained viaAssociated Presswhy formats are important when watching films.

The sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled. The headline, for me, is by shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses. You’ve got a huge screen, and you’re filling the peripheral vision of the audience.
