While speaking toVogue, Michaela Coel disclosed that the characters engage in a forbidden affair, causing disruption in ranks, which aligns with the comic lore. She emphasized accepting queer sexuality, agreeing to the role to normalize homosexuality, particularly for the people of Ghana, given her Ghanaian descent:
“I thought: I like that, I want to show that to Ghana. People say, ‘Oh, it’s fine, it’s just politics.’ But I don’t think it is just politics when it affects how people get to live their daily lives. That’s why it felt important for me to step in and do that role because I know just by my being Ghanaian, Ghanaians will come.”
Michaela Coel also revealed that since the passing of Chadwick Boseman because of colon cancer, they had been shooting the film every day for his remembrance and ensured it paid homage to him.
