A frustrating bug has been discovered inStarfieldattached to one of the most useful tools in the game, the Hellers cutter. The bug is not quite game-breaking, but it is ship-breaking, and it is sure to ruin your day if you encounter it.
The recently added shipbreaker cutter is bugged, and if you’re not careful, it could end up costing you a fair chunk of credits.
Hardspace: Shipbreaker Easter Egg is Breaking Starfield
Recently, Bethesda added an easter egg toStarfieldreferencing the popular ship-breaking adventure gameHardspace: Shipbreaker,which came in the form of a skin for the Hellers Cutter, calling it the shipbreakers cutter. InHardspace,players take on the role of a shipbreaker and use a laser cutter to breakdown and salvage spaceships.

The Hellers Cutter is the best cutting tool in the game, so a unique skin for it is a neat item to get. According to a post in the r/Starfield subreddit, the item is unfortunately bugged; if you sell it at a shop, you will not be able to buy it back. More frustrating, though, is that any attempt to purchase it will charge you, which happened to one user. “I accidentally sold mine just a couple days ago… paid for it 10 times trying to get it back.”

More frustrating is that the Shipbreakers Cutter is only available through the bounty of the Starjacker faction mission for the Trackers Alliance. So once obtained, it cannot be re-obtained, meaning if you accidentally sell it, it will be gone forever. Anyone who has ever played a Bethesda RPG will know the pain of accidentally selling a rare item and having to pay full price to get it back.
What makes this cutter so good? Along with having a uniqueHardspace-inspired skin, it also has a 95% weight reduction perk, so not only does it look cool, but it is much easier to carry in your inventory. Good inventory management is key to an enjoyable time in any game, so this cutter is a must-have.
Hopefully A Fix Is In The Works, But When In Doubt…Mods
Hopefully Bethesda is already working on a fix; thankfully, Reddit has some suggestions for potential solutions. One user, Refute1650, posits that the game “could really use a mark for sale tag,”which would, as the name suggests, allow players to tag all the items they want to sell and double-check them, preventing accidental sales.

Another simple solution would simply be an undo previous sale option or have the game autosave when you enter a merchant, so you’re able to just reload. Another Reddit user, UnderLeveledLever, suggested downloading the legendary properties recycler mod, which would allow players to make a nearly identical item.
So, mods to the rescue for Bethesda once again. If no fix is ever implemented, there is at least the chance that a moderator will somehow bring it back.
