Fans of the HBO seriesSuccessionwill be well aware that the show is loosely based on the Murdoch family and their power struggles over their media empire. The show’s depiction of a family patriarch’s death and the chaos that ensues has inspired real-life discussions among Murdoch’s children.

Successiontakes inspiration from a number of real-life families in its storytelling about the warring children of a media dynasty. However, creator Jesse Armstrong has acknowledged that the original, and perhaps most influential, inspiration was the Murdoch family. And it’s since been confirmed that several Murdochs areSuccessionviewers.
This, even led to an awkward moment between Brian Cox, who plays Logan Roy on the show, and an actual member of the Murdoch family.

Brian Cox ran into Keith Tyson, husband of Elisabeth Murdoch
During an appearance onFull Circle with Anderson Cooper, actor Brian Cox was asked if he’s had any feedback from the Murdoch clan on his performance as patriarch Logan Roy. In response, Cox shared a hilarious story of a recent encounter.

Brian Coxexplained that he spends much of his time back home in the UK, where he keeps an apartment in the north London neighborhood of Primrose Hill. One morning, Cox was enjoying a latte there when a man approached him to compliment the show:
He said ‘We’re finding it surprisingly interesting. My wife has a few difficulties with it, but on the whole, it’s good’. “I said ‘Why does your wife have difficulties?’ And he said ‘Oh, well, I’m married to Elisabeth Murdoch’!

Elisabeth is Rupert Murdoch’s second daughter, and has drawn comparisons to the character of Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook). Elisabeth began her career working for a subsidiary of her father’s Fox Corporation, before striking out solo to found her own production company, Shine—which was ultimately purchased by Murdoch’s NewsCorp.
PerThe Guardian, Elisabeth has often been described as “her father’s probable favorite, and perhaps the most suited to filling his shoes,” all of which are traitsSuccessionfans will recognize as well.

Brian Cox was asked to ‘go a little easy’ on Elisabeth Murdoch
Cox went on to reveal how he attempted to downplay the comparison between the two.“I said, ‘Well, yes, I can see that she might find that tricky!’”,adding that he emphasized that althoughSuccessiondoes take some cues from the Murdochs, there are also crucial differences between his character and Rupert Murdoch: (via Town and Country Mag)
“I [Logan] am not somebody who inherited wealth, I’m someone who’s self-made, unlike Rupert, who did inherit something!” Cox said he also insisted that the character of Shiv is “nothing like” Elisabeth.

In response, Tyson apparently said:
Is it possible, next season, could you go a little easier on your daughter?

The conversation concluded with Cox claiming that he would be willing to talk to the writers. However, knowing his own character, and the fact that Shiv ended the series by betraying her brothers, that does not seem to have turned out.
Successioncan be streamed on both Amazon Prime and Max.
