In an interview withEurogamer, just ahead of the release of theElden Ring Shadow of the Erdtreegameplay reveal trailer, Miyazaki said that he or FromSoftware did not ever think that Soulslike would be a thing, let alone a genre. He said:
We certainly didn’t come up with the term soulslike, and we didn’t envision it as a new genre or a new term for the industry. So of course, when it first started cropping up, we were very surprised.

We felt a little bit honored, but there was also a lot of trepidation there. We thought, ‘Is this really okay? Is this really what we are making? And is this really what we want to be known for?’
This is fair, as no studio or director wants to be associated with a single game or genre, but Miyazaki and FromSoftware have done it so brilliantly that’s exactly what has happened, regardless of what they thought.
