Indiana Jones Devs Wanted Players To Experience Being Indy

Speaking to Games Radar at a Develop:Brighton talk, MachineGames design director Jens Andersson mentioned how first-person “was a given for us” when it comes to developing The Great Circle. Andersson added, “there was no choice for us, we love that perspective. It’s a great way of telling stories. If you’re going to be Indiana Jones, you need to look through his eyes, you need to feel like him.”

Of course, the fact that MachineGames' previous releases were all in first-person might have factored in that decision as well. However, having played and finished the game, using a first-person perspective definitely worked in MachineGames' favor. I would have never guessed platforming and swinging from your whip would be intuitive even in first-person, since we’re used to navigating environmental puzzles and whatnot from a third-person perspective.

The player’s perspective isn’t even the hardest part in developing the game. Andersson mentioned, “It took years, of course, but it wasn’t the hardest part making this game. It was a lot of the other things that I would highlight as ‘we didn’t get this right until at the very end.”

Even 10-year-old games and DLCs are said to be getting updates.

Whatever MachineGames did, it worked well enough that the gameachieved a Mighty rating on Open Critic, with an average score of 87 from 200 reviewers.

When it comes to the game’s future,The Order of Giants premium expansionis due to be released on all platforms this fall. While there’s no official announcement regarding a sequel, license holder Disney is reportedly pleased with MachineGames’ work andwants more Indiana Jones games.

Given the game’s commercial success, a sequel seems like an inevitability, and once we hear more about that, expect it here on DualShockers.
