Marineford exposed a lot about our favorite characters and about the worst antagonists. Blackbeard and Akainu have taken permanent spots on the hit list ofeveryOne Piecefan. What’s more curious about this arc, however, is Mihawk’s performance against Monkey D. Luffy.

One Piecehas hailed Mihawk as the Strongest Swordsman in the World, making him untouchable. Throughout Marineford, he cut down an iceberg and defeated less powerful pirates left and right. When it came to Luffy, however, the swordsman couldn’t land a single hit on him.
There’s absolutely no reason for this to happen, especially when this was pre-time skip Luffy who hadn’t even trained under Silvers Rayleigh yet. The boy barely knew any Haki. So why couldn’t Mihawk, the Strongest Swordsman, strike the Straw Hat captain?

One Piecefans know Marineford was testing Luffy’s luck, not Mihawk’s swordsmanship
Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist ofOne Piece. The show must go on and it all depends on his survival.Eiichiro Odahas given himplot armor that is strongerthan most anime protagonists, going as far as writing it into the series. The Marineford Arc solidified this with his fight against Mihawk.
While the swordsman’s battle with Luffy doesn’t look good for him and fuels the idea that he’s a fraud, it isn’t the point of the fight. The young pirate’s luck is undeniably strong. Just before Marineford, he was poisoned heavily by Magellan and survived. No amount of medical assistance should’ve helped.

One Piecefans on Reddit also debate heavily about his battle against Mihawk. If he wasn’t holding back, then how did Luffy not get a scratch? Fans come to his defense and analyze the scene. Whetherit’s Luffy’s plot armoror a mistranslation, fans misunderstood their fight.
When bringing up the mistranslation, it’s clear that Mihawk meant Yoru wouldn’t hold back, which caused some of his haters to believe he doesn’t have control over his blade. However, this isn’t the case and his accuracy with his blade meant he was, indeed, holding back for Luffy’s safety.

If he hadn’t done this, Luffy might’ve been injured badly but the young pirate’s luck would’ve never allowed this.
Other characters, including Luffy’s previous enemies, were all coming in his defense. The Marineford Arc was a testament to the Straw Hat captain’s will, especially when he’s desperately trying to save his brother.

Is Mihawk a fraud?
The swordsman went against the literal protagonist ofOne Pieceduring an arc where he isn’t the main villain. There was already no chance of him winning. Mihawk was merely an obstacle in Luffy’s path to saving Ace.
The Marineford Arc was a show of Luffy’s will, depicting the lengths he’d go through to save his loved one. Mihawk was never meant to deliver the final blow when not even Akainu could.
Gear 5 Luffy Will Cook Mihawk- One Piece Fans Are Still Delusional About the Power Level of the World’s Strongest Swordsman
The swordsman’s purpose in the story isn’t to be the biggest enemy to Luffy. He’s Zoro’s rival andhe serves as his biggest obstacle. He might’ve played the World Government’s pawn in this arc, but he hates the system, creating the Cross Guild. So, no,he isn’t a fraud. He’s just merciful and Luffy is lucky.
