Its sci-fi narrative continues to impress viewers, offering plenty of deep thematic undercurrents along with a poignant space exploration journey. However, some fans believe that Nolan’s concept for the film wasn’t exactly original and came from an episode of the sitcomFRIENDS.

On Reddit, fans of the sitcom discussed an episode of the series, which sees Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbiani appear in a play. The play seems to have similar themes toInterstellarand fans cannot help but notice similarities. As a result, some fans believe Joey was directly responsible for inspiring the hit sci-fi blockbuster, and here is everything you need to know about it.

FRIENDSFans Think One Episode Was the Inspiration For Christopher Nolan’sInterstellar

Christopher Nolan’sInterstellarwas released in 2014 and emerged as a critical and commercial success. The film is set in a dystopian future and follows a group of astronauts searching for a habitable planet. However, some fans believe this idea comes from the sitcomFRIENDS.

On Reddit, one userclaimedthat Nolan got the idea for the movie from the season 3 episode ofFRIENDS, titledThe One With The Screamer. In the episode, Joey Tribbiani, played byMatt LeBlancappears in a play and delivers the following lines.

I’m gonna go to Blargon 7 in search of alternative fuels. But when I return, 200 years from now, you’ll be long gone but I won’t have aged at all.

Joey’s dialog in the play is reminiscent of the interaction between Cooper and his daughter, years after the former returns home from his space mission.

While there is some similarity between the two scenes, it is still a stretch to callInterstellarinspired by Joey’s play. Instead, both scenes discuss the theory of general relativity, which is hardly an original concept in sci-fi. Nonetheless, seeing Joey demonstrate some understanding of general relativity qualifies him as a genius in our books.

The True Origin and Influences Behind Christopher Nolan’sInterstellar

Most fans seem to agree that the similarities between Joey’s play and Nolan’sInterstellarare simply a coincidence. However, it is still worth noting thatChristopher Nolandid not conceive the film’s concept. Instead, the project wasreportedlythe brainchild of veteran producer Lynda Obst and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne.

The duo worked together on Robert Zemeckis’ 1997 filmContactand developed an outline based on Thorne’s theories of warped space-time. Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, was later hired to pen a screenplay based on the outline, with Steven Spielberg attached to direct.

However, after Spielberg departed the project, Nolan came on board and fused some of his ideas with the existing screenplay. During a separateinterview, Nolan cited films such as2001: A Space Odyssey,Close Encounters of the Third Kind, andThe Mirroras inspiration behind the movie. However, the director also noted thatInterstellarwasn’t his answer to classic sci-fi movies but an amalgamation of sci-fi ideas and themes he was excited by.
