The Place Beyond the PinessawRyan Goslingas Luke Glanton, a motorcycle stuntman who becomes a criminal to provide for his family, comprising lover Romina (Eva Mendes) and son Jason (Dane DeHaan).
According to director Derek Cianfrance (viaIndie Wire), Gosling designed tattoos for his character with his friend Ben Shields, who designed tattoos covering the body. For anyone who needs a quick refresh, Luke had a face tattoo of a dagger dripping teardrop of blood. The regret was instant because Gosling looked bothered on the first day of shooting.
TheCrazy, Stupid, Loveactor asked the director:
“I went too far with the tattoo, can we take it off?”
Cianfrance had other plans. He explained his reasoning for making Gosling keep the tattoo, saying:
Although the director went to great lengths to make the movie, it failed to be a commercial success as it only grossed a worldwide total of $47.1 million, against a budget of $15 million.
Ryan Gosling Went Through Quite Some Transformations for the Movie
The Place Beyond the Pines, released in 2013, marked the second collaboration between director Derek Cianfrance and Gosling. The two had previously worked together on the 2010 romantic drama filmBlue Valentine, in which Gosling starred alongside Michelle Williams.

When asked about the transformations Gosling underwent to embody Luke, Cianfrance said:
“Gosling started lifting weights. Every time I see him he’s getting bigger and bigger, he gained 40 pounds of muscle. He was working with his friend Ben Shields who designs tattoos covering the body. He showed pictures of himself as a young boy with blond hair so he was dying his hair blond.”
