Hollywood veteran Denzel Washington has proven more than once that he can be as unbothered and nonchalant offscreen as he often portrays through his onscreen characters without hesitation. If anything, he is as straightforward as can be and doesn’t waver to admit his thoughts out loud, even if they could garner him negative attention and backlash.

That said, when it came to his opinion on one of the greatest filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, whom Hollywood swears by and who left this world a bit too early, Washington didn’t think twice before ostensibly politely showing the finger to the late legend. And since then, fans have been in a serious debate as they express mixed reactions to the same.
Denzel Washington is sparking heat for comments on Stanley Kubrick
Even though it has been quite a while since he left this world at only 70, the late legendary directorStanley Kubrickcontinues to leave an indelible mark on his audiences through his outstanding works. To say the least, he is one of those filmmakers that Hollywood swears by, also recognized among the greatest filmmakers of all time by many.
If anything, with the level of recognition, respect, and commendation that he built for himself throughout his brilliant career, it seems rather impossible that there would be someone out there who wouldn’t have witnessed at least one of his entertainment projects. ButDenzel Washingtonappears to prove that thought wrong by claiming he wasn’t familiar with Kubrick’s works.

At least that’s what he expressed during an interview viaCollider, when, in a curveball question asked by the correspondent Steven Weintraub at the beginning of the interview, he was asked to name his “favorite Kubrick movie.” Much to everyone’s surprise, Washington said he didn’t really have one, as he wasn’t familiar with Stanley Kubrick’s work.

Replying to the question as unhesitantly as ever,The Equalizerstar said:
I’m not a movie buff. No, I’m not a big movie fan. I was in the street when he was making movies. What, it was the ones in the 70s? Yeah, I’d be the one outside looking to rob you when you came out of a [Stanley] Kubrick movie, OK? (Laughs) So I wasn’t a real film buff.

Continuing, the 69-year-old Hollywood veteran explainedwhat exactly he meant by not being a movie buff, pointing out how he “didn’t start acting until I was 20 years old and didn’t start really going to the movies till I was 20, 22, 23,” before correcting himself to say, “That’s not true. As a teenager, I went to see movies like Shaft and Superfly, and, you know.”
This prompted a “Totally, yeah, you know, it’s good. You might have landed on your feet” comment from Weintraub, to which, Denzel Washington responded, “Yeah, it worked out.” Either way, fans seem to be having mixed reactions to this confession by theGladiator IIactor, with some supporting his response while others calling him out over his ignorance.

Fans have mixed reactions to Denzel Washington’s response
As perplexing as this situation was, it is being interpreted differently by fans. On the one hand, some fans are supporting Denzel Washington and placing the blame on Weintraub, since the former was wearing a T-shirt with Stanley Kubrick’s image on it during the interview, leading to them thinking he was being presumptuous in assuming the actor had the same cultural experience with cinema.
PerDaily Mail, one of the fans expressed their reaction along the same lines as they wrote, “I’M SO GLAD DENZEL DID THIS! He’s definitely a movie buff, but what he was really saying was why this man thought he could ask someone like Denzel who champions Black films, to speak about a white director instead of a Black one.”

Denzel Washington’s Total Payout for the 3 “Equalizer” Movies Is Mind-Boggling
Continuing, the fan reportedly wrote further, “White film critics are insufferable this way. The arrogance to be doing press for a film and wear a shirt by another filmmaker … to quiz the actors about that person’s filmography like they’re contestants on a game show … they position everything from their very white, and in this case white male perspective.”
In the meanwhile, some other fans placed the blame game ontheTraining Daystaras they expressed how they felt him to have come out of the interview with his nose turned out. All in all, here are some of the mixed reactions the users commented on the interview shared on Collider’s official Instagram page (@collider):
He threw a curve ball right back at ya frosty 😂
Oh brother this is cringe
So in the last 40 years he’s never seen the Shining? lol
His way of saying he doesn’t know any Kubrick films lol
I love that he didn’t stomp on the dude. Took his pompous shit and dealt with it like the king he is.
Why is everyone acting like this is a pretentious question it’s such a valid question
Big fan of Denzel but kinda of a sh*tty answer. Damn lol.
Denzel’s ego is immeasurable.
This isn’t uncommon. Just because you are really good at something, doesn’t mean you’re a big fan of the art/craft.
Probably doesn’t like any Kubrick films he’s seen but there’s no polite way to say that 😂😂
All of this being acknowledged, Denzel Washington’s comments on Stanley Kubrick have inevitably ignited a thought-provoking heated debate among fans about cultural experiences, cinematic knowledge, and the complexities of being a film enthusiast.
As some admire his honesty and others express their disappointment by his lack of knowledge about the legendary filmmaker, it becomes only evident that not everyone is okay with Washington’s ostensibly politely showing the finger to Kubrick, and perhaps, thatisokay.
