The Lord of the Ringsactor Sean Astin has fallen in and out of the industry’s radar ever since his debut as a child actor. He may be most famously known for playing the hobbit Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s live-actionLOTRtrilogy, but Astin’s career is far more enduring and remarkable than that.

Despite being a child star, Astin never faded out of the industry, instead building a career that was not only impressive but sustainable as well. From playing Mikey Walsh inThe Goonies(1985) to the titular character inRudy(1993), the charming actor has resurfaced once more after hisLOTRera to star in two wildly popular projects for modern fans:Stranger ThingsandA Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter.
The many dreams and aspirations of Sean Astin
Each one of us has lofty dreams, goals, and aspirations about what we want to do as adults very early on in our lives. Actors and celebrities who are now worth millions of dollars were no different when they were young, too. Even those with a once-in-a-lifetime role in their bags, likeSean AstininLord of the Rings, happened to carry similar ambitions when he was barely a teen.
While these goals often help shape our future and help us land on our own two feet, often as children, our ambitions take on wildly disproportionate forms without the barrier of reality to limit one’s imagination in the vast realm of possibilities. For Sean Astin, a similar idealogy made him choose the three most appealing career choices that spoke to him as a kid.

When asked bySir Ian McKellenabout the same inThe Lord of the Rings‘ 15th-anniversary interview forEmpire, Astin boldly revealed:
By 14, I had decided on three modest goals and repeated them often to everyone. I wanted to be a world-class filmmaker, CEO of a multi-billion-dollar entertainment company and President of the United States. I’ve had to settle for journeyman actor.C’est la vie.

Despite hailing from an acting family, Sean Astin’s childhood aspirations varied vastly from that which came naturally to him. Astin’s life eventually steered him toward the industry where he ended up directing a film in 1994 titledKangaroo Courtthat was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Short Film.
In 2002, Astin was cast as Samwise Gamgee, best friend to Frodo Baggins, the protagonist intheLord of the Ringstrilogy.

Celebrities and their political ambitions
Sean Astin is not the only actor to dream of sitting in the Oval Office one day. Celebrities have always been enamored with political ambitions for as long as one cares to remember. It began with Ronald Reagan who achieved the impossible by being the first actor to win the Presidential elections and ascend to the White House. He served as the president of the United States for two consecutive terms from 1981 to 1989.
Soon after,Arnold Schwarzeneggerbegan to set the tone when he achieved stratospheric fame and success as an actor and bodybuilder, married into the Kennedy family – then considered American political royalty – and became the Governor of California. He served as the 38th governor of the state for two consecutive terms from 2003 to 2011.

Clint Eastwood, the effervescent Western icon, also served a single term of two years as the Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, after being elected in 1986. He did not seek reelection at the end of his term. Recently, celebrities likeDwayne JohnsonandKanye West, professionally known as Ye, have also sought to run for office, although they never launched a campaign.
The Lord of the Ringstrilogy is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
