During a live stream hosted by his publisher, Random House, Martin candidly admitted that he has abandoned any hopes of predicting a release date forThe Winds of Winter(viaRadio Times). He said,
I’ve given up making predictions, because people press me and press me: ‘When is it going to be done?’ And I make what I think is the best-case estimate, and then stuff happens. Then everybody gets mad that I ‘lied.’ I’ve never lied about these predictions. They’re the best I can make, but I guess I overestimate my ability to get stuff done, and I underestimate the amount of interruptions and other projects, other demands that will distract me.

In a recentblog post, he opened up about the heightened stress he’s been experiencing, describing the first half of 2024 as“pretty miserable.”He also shared that the sudden loss of a close friend in January left him struggling to find comfort. Sharing an update on the most waited part he wrote,
Writing came hard, and though I did produce some new pages on both The Winds of Winter (yes) and Blood & Fire (the sequel to Fire & Blood, the second part of my Targaryen history), I would have liked to turn out a lot more.
Although the writer wishes he could have produced more, fans are more than happy to hear that progress has been made, no matter how small. While it sometimes feels like he might be teasing us, hope remains strong among fans! After waiting for nearly a decade, they’re willing to endure a bit longer for the reward. Anything for the reward!!
