It was announced thatMs. Marveldirector Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was helming the project.

Fans were not exactly as excited as Ridley for the project. Obaid-Chinoy was an activist and journalist who won the Oscars two times for her two documentaries, that covered the topic of gender inequalities in society. Fans believed that Disney was bringing on the director to further its propaganda politics. However, the director’s latest comments may make some fans happy.

She has had conversations with all the major filmmakers who have worked on aStar Warsproject, includingGeorge Lucas. She also spoke toJ.J. AbramsandDave Filoniregarding the project.

Obaid-Chinoy made it clear that these conversations were not a one-off thing. She added that she talked to them very often. She also shared that she has a great team at Disney and Lucasfilm to pull off the project. All they needed to do was to do justice to the story of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Obaid-Chinoy toldSirius XM:

We speak very often, and Kathy Kennedy, Carrie Beck, and Simon Emanuel – I think the team is really taking time to make sure that we do justice to telling the story of Daisy.

According toVariety,Peaky Blinderscreator Steven Knight was roped in to write the new film for Obaid-Chinoy. He replaced Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson as the screenwriter in March 2023. Lindelof and Britt-Gibson had already written a first draft of the story.

Daisy Ridley’s character Rey (or is she Rey Skywalker?) will attempt to build a new Jedi order in the upcoming film. During an interview with IGN, Lucasfilm PresidentKathleen Kennedyprovided hints about the direction of Obaid-Chinoy’s newStar Warsfilm. According to Kennedy, the film will be set 15 years after the events ofThe Rise of Skywalker.

Well, we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books… based on what she promised Luke. So, that’s where we’re going.

The untitled film is expected to hit the theaters in 2026.
