However, the controversy at the time had little to do with his performance, as it boiled down to the allegations of domestic abuse in the early 2000s after he parted ways with his then-wife Donya Fiorentino.

In 2001, Donya Fiorentino accusedGary Oldmanof domestic abuse, alleging that the latter grabbed the phone from her hand and hit her in the face while she was attempting to call the cops, adding (viaNew York Daily News),“Both of their children were crying.”

Although the judge later ruled in favor of Oldman and even granted him full custody of their kids, reportedly finding“Oldman to be the better parent,”the accusations resurfaced following the actor’s Oscar buzz in 2017.

Moreover, in the wake of his Oscar win, Fiorentino called out the Academy over their apparent hypocrisy, stressing (viaTMZ),“I thought we had evolved.”

Even though Oldman didn’t engage with the controversy, one of his sons, who, per Fiorentino, was present during the alleged altercation, denied the claims.

I can see how coming out with a statement to combat an allegation must look. However, I was there at the time of the ‘incident,’ so I’d like to make this radiantly clear: it didn’t happen. Anyone who says it did is lying.
On the flip side, these allegations have done little to hinder Oldman’s dedication to the medium, who was once again the center of attraction for hisbrief cameoinOppenheimer, which dominated 2024’s Oscars.
