Unfortunately, Roberts experienced something similar a few years ago, learning just how cruel people can be on the internet.
The Internet Turned Something Beautiful Horrid
Many years ago,Emma Robertsposted a picture of herself with her aunt on her Instagram. The picture was simple, withJulia Robertsand her playing cards on what seemed to be a sunny morning. However, the internet ended up turning the picture into a horrid experience for both of them.
During an interview withHarper’s Bazaar, thePretty Womanactress confessed that the picture was supposed to capture a fun moment that she was having with her niece. However, the comments on the post started to focus more on how the actress was aging than anything else. She confessed that there were comments that criticized every aspect of her appearance.
Something did happen recently on my niece Emma’s Instagram that I think taught me a lot about what it’s like being a young person in today’s society. One weekend morning Emma slept over, and we got up and were having tea and playing cards and having this beautiful morning, and then a couple of days later she posted a picture of us.

Some fans commented that the beautiful actress was “not aging well,” while others went as far as to say that she looked like a man. Every single part of her appearance was torn to bits in that comment section, with some even questioning her niece for posting such a picture.
And the number of people who felt absolutely required to talk about how terrible I looked in the picture—that I’m not aging well, that I look like a man, why would she even post a picture like this when I look that terrible!
The response was so daunting that Emma Roberts ended up deleting the post from her profile. However, the damage was done, and the actress very painfully learned the realities of social media.
Julia Roberts Was Blindsided
In the interview, Julia Roberts confessed that she was shocked at how much these comments affected her. Having been in the film industry for a very long time, the actress would have naturally grown a very strong backbone, being able to take criticism for decades.
However, she still found herself feeling affected by the mean remarks about her appearance. She pointed out that the picture was supposed to be a still of a sweet moment between her and her niece. They were enjoying a beautiful morning and each other’s company while playing cards.
I was amazed at how that made me feel. I’m a 50-year-old woman and I know who I am, and still my feelings got hurt. I was sad that people couldn’t see the point of it, the sweetness of it, the absolute shining joy of that photo. I thought, “What if I was 15?”

Roberts pointed out that she felt frustrated that people could not see the intention behind the image. Rather than focusing on the comments, she began to think about the actual impact that such treatment could have on the masses. The actress pointed out that she could not imagine how such criticism would affect a 15-year-old, who was still building a sense of self only to get it ripped apart.
