One of the major highlights of Amazon’s merger with MGM was James Bond. Given the IP’s rich cinematic history, it’s easy to see why the suits would’ve been thrilled by the prospect of expanding the franchise. But producers Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson have allegedly not been too thrilled about this new partnership.

While it was reported that Amazon was planning to incorporate a female Bond in the next installment, the producer was against it, as she didn’t want to undermine roles for women.
Barbara Broccoli is against a female James Bond
The debate surrounding a potential female James Bond has been pretty divisive, to say the least, as while many agree that an actress of high caliber would absolutely nail the gig, purists aren’t too thrilled by this big leap.

As forBarbara Broccoli, the producer, previously toldTHRthat there shouldn’t be a female Bond, as instead of gender-swapping, she believes in“making characters for women”, adding“It’s very important to me that we make movies for women about women”.
I think [the next James Bond] will be a man because I don’t think a woman should play James Bond. I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles.

This further adds weight to her reported stance against Amazon’s apparent female Bond plans, and it’s not hard to see why most would see eye to eye with Broccoli’s approach to the subject.
Women should have roles that are as good as Bond
The James Bond producer’s statements sit in line with that ofDaniel Craig‘s viewpoint, who previously commended Broccoli forpreserving the integrityof the IP in the modern blockbuster landscape. Craig argued (viaRadio Times) that there should be roles as good as Bond for women in the business, and this has been the case with the modern installments in the franchise.
The answer to that is very simple. There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?

Apart from ensuring that corporate greed is out of the IP, Broccoli has been successful in translating Bond into the modern landscape. Considering Bond displayed misogynistic tendencies in past iterations, the Craig-led version incorporated more empowering themes, especiallyNo Time to Die, which saw Lashana Lynch’s Nomi becoming the first female 007.
