Stan Lee’s cameos were one iconic aspect of the Marvel universe, so it is only natural that fans wondered if James Gunn would do something similar inCreature Commandos, his debut project for the new DC Universe.

When asked, Gunn flat-out denied any plans for a cameo, leaving fans to believe he’d stay behind the curtains. But lo and behold, there he was, making an appearance! So, why did Gunn lie? Here is the full story!

In the lead-up toCreature Commandos, one curious fan asked if Gunn would appear on-screen himself, perhaps in a classic cameo? To that Gunn gave a clear and blunt“No,”putting the speculation to rest.
But fast forward to the show’s release, and fans were both shocked and surprised to spot him in the animated intro sequence! While the cameo wasn’t exactly what they’d envisioned, it was enough to spark a discussion online. As expected, fans had plenty to say about this, here is what they said,

Huge fan of James but idk why he lies sometimes lolIf you wanna be ultra specific you can say he was debunking the Stan Lee comparison (which I never said btw) but stillhttps://t.co/tSA7uj3GsG
He isn’t wrong though. He appeared in the opening credits as himself. Not in the series or any speaking role like in Harley Quinn.

I think he was extremely specific which reply he chose to shoot down, and chose the one asking about a “Stan Lee” like cameo
I feel he doesn’t want to spoil us and just wants to keep it secret till it releases

He is a liar
But the real reason behind it is a little more layered. While technically this doesn’t count as a traditional cameo as he did inHarley Quinn, Gunn didn’t exactly lie when he said he wouldn’t appear. It turns out, the animated James Gunn in the intro was a surprise, even to him! So, while he might’ve kept fans in the dark, he too got caught off guard by this twist.

I don’t think that I’m going to pop up in Creature Commandos, Dean did that to me, he thought he was doing me a favor and now I’m going to be forever accused of putting myself in the opening credits.
The animated James Gunn featured in the opening credits ofCreature Commandoswasn’t his own doing, it was the work of producer Dean Lorey. So, when fans asked Gunn if he’d be appearing in the series, he genuinely said no. Fans are excited to find out what else the team has up their sleeves!
