Nick Offerman’s Ron Swanson was certainly a highlight ofParks and Recreation. The character managed to break all stereotypes that were put on him, starting the series alone and opinionated and ending it with a family and still just as opinionated. Although his character does grow in more ways than one, he doesn’t ever lose his essence, simply turning from individualistic to a family man.

Offerman has been known for being extremely like his character. The actor enjoys woodwork and is more than a little similar to Ron when it comes to personality. However, there is one aspect where the two are of very differing opinions: politics.

Ron Swanson vs. Parks and Recreation Department

Ron Swanson has always been very vocal about his thoughts on the government. He has always been candid about his support of the libertarian ideology. However, Ron is a paradox, hating the government while working in the government. Despite being in a very high position, he started off his run inParks and Recreationby exclaiming his dislike for bureaucracy.

I don’t believe in government. I think that all government is a waste of taxpayer money. My dream is to have the park system privatized and run entirely for profit by corporations.

Going as far as to call it a waste of money, he mentioned that he wanted the Parks department in the series to get privatized and run for profit. With how extreme his beliefs are, one cannot help but wonder why he works for the government in the first place. The character explained this as well at one point in the series.

Addressing the peculiarity of his profession with his beliefs, he mentioned that he took a job in the government to help dismantle it from the inside. Although he does not get very far in this goal of his, Leslie Knope does end up helping him warm up to bureaucracy in one way or another.

Ron Swanson and Nick Offerman Are Different in One Way

Although Ron Swanson andNick Offermanhave a lot in common, it would seem that political beliefs aren’t one of them. During an interview withGQ, the actor spoke on exactly this, confessing that he did have a lot in common with hisParks and Recreationcharacter, but politics wasn’t one of them.

Offerman has been a very vocal Democrat since the 2016 elections. However, he revealed that he is not a libertarian. Although he does admire that philosophy and respect those who have it, he does not fully agree with it himself, finding it to be ineffective in modern-day politics.

While I admire the philosophy of the Libertarian mindset, I think it’s proven to be ineffectual in actual governance. So no, I’m not [a Libertarian]. I’m a free-thinking American.

He finished this by saying that he was more of a free-thinking person, much like Ron Swanson. While the character and the actor are very similar in real life, it would seem that there are enough distinctions to separate the two.
