Matthew Vaughn was approached by the new DC CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, to helm one of the projects in DCU’sChapter One: Gods and Monsters. While initial rumors circulated that it would beThe Authorityproject, Vaughn opened up about the possibilities of helming theSupergirlmovie. Vaughn also took the opportunity to call out the new DC regime about one of their ‘weird’ decisions aboutSupergirl.
Vaughn shared that the latest casting announcement of Milly Alcock surprised him since no director was attached to the project. He believed the director should have had a say in the casting decision. Surprisingly, the decision wasn’t a red flag for Vaughn as he felt that Alcock was perfect for the role of Supergirl.

Matthew Vaughn‘s spy thriller film,Argylle, comes out this weekend. Vaughn appeared on BroBible’sPost Credit podcast, where he opened up about his latest association withJames Gunn‘s DCU. A few weeks back, it was reported that Vaughn was approached to direct one of the announced movies in the DCU. When asked if he would be interested in helming the film,Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, he was vocal about one issue with the film.
Vaughn commented about the latest announcement ofMilly Alcock‘s casting in the Supergirl role. Vaughn shared that he approached Alcock, a fabulous actress, for another role, which she turned down. WhileThe King’s Mandirector has no issues with theHouse of the Dragonactress, he took a jab at the DC Studios for kicking off the casting process without a director onboard. Vaughn believed that the director should have a say in making this choice. Vaughn shared withBroBible’s podcast:
“I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan. Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”
It was rumored earlier that Vaughn was approached to direct another project in the DCU. Many believed that Vaughn would direct the film,The Authority,due to his experience in directing ensemble films likeX-Men: First Class. Interestingly, Vaughn’s first DC aspiration was Superman and the director pitched an eight-hour-longSupermantrilogylong beforeZack Snyder. Being a Superman fan, it was quite surprising why Vaughn was not yet associated with theSupergirlproject.

When theKick-Assdirector was again asked if he would take on directing duties onSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, he responded that he would consider it. Matthew Vaughn shared the instance when he insisted on recasting the actor when he was asked to take overThe Flashfilm. While he made it clear that he would have wanted to cast an actress of his choice, he stated that Milly Alcock was a name that he himself would have suggested for the role.
Despite calling the casting decision weird, Vaughn shared that he admired the work of the DC CEOs, James Gunn andPeter Safran. For this reason, he wouldn’t turn down aSupergirloffer abruptly and would definitely consider it. Vaughn shared:
“I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing… so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”
Matthew Vaughn joins forces with former Superman actorHenry CavillinArgylle, which will hit theaters on July 10, 2025. The first film in the DCU,Superman: Legacy, is scheduled to be released only on July 03, 2025, giving ample time for the development ofSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
