According to the bookThe Nolan Variations: The Movies, Mysteries, and Marvels of Christopher Nolanby Tom Shone, Warner Bros executive Greg Silverman provided Nolan with a couple of requirements before proceeding with their plans for theBatmanfilm. Aside from ensuring a PG rating, he also said that “it would be great if [Batman] had a very cool car.”

At this point, we already know he wanted Nolan to create his own version of the Batmobile. The filmmaker was reluctant at first, doubting if they could make it work. The Tumbler became a key element inThe Dark Knighttrilogy, and it definitelymade tons of money in the merchandising department. Nolan originally assumed he would never deal with the problem of creating a Batmobile, but he and production designer Nathan Crowley ultimately found a way to make it happen.
