A brand-new, chaotic first-person shooter with a twist hitSteamearlier this week. Anger Foot is a fast-paced action game that developer Free Lives says was heavily inspired by the likes ofHotline Miamiand SWAT 4.

Initially announced back in June 2022, Anger Foot was originally due to release in 2023. But, as part of aspecial Devolver Delayed showcase(yes, Devolver had a showcase dedicated to all of its delayed games), the publisher announced that Anger Foot had been pushed back into 2024. The studio then shoe-d off (get it?) a brand-new trailer at Devolver Digital 2024 and confirmed the first-person shoe-ter (sorry) would be hitting Steam on July 11.

“Better Than Overwatch”: Despite Initial Reception, Fans Are Loving Concord

Concord initially received a negative response from the community when it was revealed, but fans appear to be loving the early access beta.

At the time of writing, Anger Foot has a “very positive” review badge on Steam and a pretty modestMetacriticscore of 77. Our sister siteThe Gamercalled it a “well-placed, smartly designed” shooter that “gives you all the tools you need to tailor the experience to your taste.”

Now, in anew interviewwith Game Rant, Free Lives developer Luc Wolthers has talked a little bit about where the studio found inspiration for this wacky new shooter. According to Wolthers, Anger Foot’s derelict and crime-ridden world takes a lot of inspiration from another one of publisher Devolver Digital’s titles: Hotline Miami.

“Hotline Miami definitely does form a big part of the inspiration, especially when it comes to the style of the game and kind of a seedy, underground, derelict world replete with crime,” Wolthers said.

Hotline Miami

If you’ve already had the opportunity to check out Anger Foot, you’ve likely already picked up on the Hotline Miami influences. The core gameplay loop of clearing out room after room with constant fast-paced action gives you an instant Hotline Miami feel, but it’s also Anger Foot’s upgradeable sneakers that are a clear homage to Hotline Miami’s masks. Both of which allow the player to unlock special abilities when upgraded.

But it’s not just Hotline Miami that served as an inspiration for Anger Foot. Wolthers also told Game Rant that Free Lives looked at various “door entry” games during the conceptual phase of Anger Foot. One of the games that inspired the studio the most was 2005’s tactical shooter, SWAT 4.

“But, truth be told, Robbie and I looked a lot atSWAT 4and other “door entry” games when we were initially considering how we were going to handle Anger Foot,“Wolthers told Game Rant.

Anger Foot is out now on PC via Steam.
