Horimiyais often considered one of the best romance anime that debuted in recent years. It follows a budding relationship between Kyoko Hori and Izumi Miymura, two characters who have their own secrets to keep. It has a calming atmosphere with charming characters which can instantly draw in any romance lover.

However, the anime is not devoid of issues. From its pacing to its portrayal of Hori, after a point, the anime seems to go off the tracks. The biggest problem is that the series sidelines one of the main characters.

Horimiyaignored one of its leads to favor the other

At the beginning of the series, both Miyamura and Hori are introduced as the main characters. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that one character is overpowering the other. Thenarrative often focuses on Miyamurawhile completely sidelining Hori’s development.

Miyamura’s journey of self-discovery becomes a major plot point, and his acceptance of his true self becomes central. The story also delved more into the internal thoughts of Miyamura and his swirling emotions providing more insights into the character. In fact, at one point, fans even started viewing Hori as an abusive person.

Since the anime began by focusing on the relationship between the two characters, fans expected a proper development of both. However, Miyamura hogs the spotlight while Hori is left to deal with crumbs. The portrayal of her character does not make things any easier, either.

Hori suddenly becomes an unlikeable character

The character development of Hori is an extremely controversial topic at the moment. In fact, the anime smoothed over a lot of problematic elements in the manga. But even the downplay of such developments could not save Hori from being hated by the fandom.

One thing about the character is that she is possessive about Miyamura. Which in itself is not such a terrible thing. However, fans just cannot seem to forget her bullying behavior or forcing Miyamura into things that he doesn’t like doing. The anime also leaves out the internal monologues of Hori, leading fans to have little idea about her character.

While pushing Miyamura for little things is fine, Hori sometimes drags him a bit too much out of his comfort zone. Additionally, she instructs him who to not talk to, something that has not been received well. There are plenty ofside characters whose development also takes up much of the screen time. And coupled with Miyamura acting as the main protagonist, Hori is left under-developed and unexplained.
