One of the most unique things you’ll notice when comparingHigh on Lifeto other first-person shooter games is how unconventional the combat is. While most shooters go with traditional types of weapons that mirror real-world weapons, High on Life’s weapons are living, breathing aliens called Gatlians.

As you may imagine, using a living alien as a weapon naturally comes with all sorts of bizarre and unconventional perks with how they function in battle. Although the total list of weapons is relatively short, High on Life does a great job of creating a unique experience in any combat situation. Here’s our ranking of every weapon and gun available in the game.

Coming in sixth place is Gus. He performs similarly to a shotgun, allowing you to pepper the enemy with a powerful blast at close-range. The damage is fairly high but quickly loses effectiveness if you are just a couple of meters away. Gus also has the ability to suck in enemies from a short distance, allowing you to draw them in close before you fire one of your 3 available shots. The downside of this move is that it is wildly inaccurate. Sometimes when you draw them in, they get tangled up below you or off to the side — so when you fire, it doesn’t fully hit them. The suction also doesn’t have a great range, so you’re able to only really use it if you are already pretty close to the enemy.

Probably the most effective attack he possesses is the secondary disk-blade attack. This move is used for both exploration and damaging enemies. When fired at an enemy, the disk will bounce off of them, with the potential to bounce back and forth between multiple enemies. It does a modest amount of damage but has great range and can be fairly effective when used against weaker enemies.

Acquired early on in the game, Knifey quickly becomes one of your most used weapons. Typically, you’ll use them to open chests or grapple various obstacles in the game. But they can also be used as a melee weapon in combat.

While Knifey doesn’t do a ton of damage, he is still pretty effective in combat. He can one-shot the weaker enemies in the game and is useful when you are in a pinch between reloading. You can also purchase an upgrade at the Pawn Shop that will allow you to stagger enemies, making the weapon useful against even the toughest enemies in the game.

Lezduit is the last weapon you will acquire in the game. Being the most powerful of all the Gatlians, he absolutely demolishes enemies. His firing method consists of getting as many enemies within your wide range-finder and then electrifying them with deadly force. When used well, you’re able to obliterate a dozen or more enemies at once.

The downside of Lezduit is the cool-down period between clips. After you drain all of his energy, it’ll take about ten seconds before you can use him again, making him effectively useless during this time. Despite this drawback, Lezduit would have made it higher on the list had he been available to use throughout the game. Since you only get to use him on the last mission where you take on Garmantuous, Lezduit lands a humble spot in the middle of the list.

Likely the sassiest of all the Gatlians you wield, Sweezy tears up the battlefield in style. Her standard fire handles like a submachine gun, peppering the enemy with sharp crystals that can be detonated with a melee attack from Knifey. She also has a powerful semi-auto shot you can use by aiming down her sights. This gives you more range and the ability to fire through shields.

Sweezy fires time bubble

Sweezy’s trick-hole attack is also pretty useful, allowing you to create a time bubble that slows enemies caught within it. This is effective against most slower-moving enemies but doesn’t do as great of a job with faster ones.

If there were an award for the most bizarre Gatlian, it would definitely go to Creature. His primary attack sends out tiny babies that hunt down and kill enemies for you. He is the DPS (damage per second) type weapon in the game, allowing you to fire a half-dozen babies in the enemies’ general direction and slowly drain their health while you focus on killing other enemies or evading enemy fire.

His secondary attack allows you to fire off a single Hypno Baby. When it attaches to the enemy, they become an ally and attack the other enemies with you. Creature becomes even more effective when equipped with the Heartsap Mod. This mod causes the babies to return health to you each time they kill an enemy. This is incredibly helpful, especially when you are fighting a lot of enemies later in the game.

There’s a reason Kenny is the first weapon you acquire and the main Gatlian advertised in the game - he’s the most useful and balanced weapon in the bunch. He operates like a standard pistol, allowing you to do moderate damage at any range. When fired from the hip, you’re able to quickly lay down multiple shots into an enemy. When you aim with the sights, you are able to make precise shots even when you’re far away.

Kenny’s secondary attack, the Glob Shot, is also one of the best secondaries in the game. It functions like a grenade, causing initial blast damage and AoE (area of effect) damage. When you hit an enemy or enemies, it will blast them into the air, allowing you to juggle them by firing regular shots, doing massive damage while keeping the enemy immobile. There is also a Multiglob Mod that you can equip to add additional, smaller globs to the shot, causing more damage and a bigger AoE. All of these perks make Kenny a great choice for all combat situations and the best gun in the game.
