Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind the Soulsborne series andElden Ring, is known for his penchant for creating some of the most horrifying and challenging enemies in gaming history. But even with the recent release of the highly anticipatedShadow of the ErdtreeDLC, it seems that one particular foe from the base game still holds the “crown” for being the most annoying enemy in the Lands Between.

Enter the Revenant, a creature that has been the bane of many Tarnished’s existence sinceElden Ring‘s launch over two years ago. With its arachnid-like body structure and unsettlingly human face, this non-boss enemy has managed to strike fear (and perhaps a bit of disgust) into the hearts of even the most seasoned players.

The Revenant: Miyazaki’s Masterclass in Frustration

It’s not just their unsettling appearance that makes Revenants so annoying. These enemies are extremely aggressive and hostile, with a relentless and seemingly endless attack pattern that can catch even the most cautious players off guard. It’s almost as ifMiyazakisat down and thought,“How can I make an enemy that will make players want to tear their hair out?”

As one Redditor aptly put it:

To add insult to injury, Revenants have the ability to open up dimensional portals, allowing them to quickly close the distance between themselves and their prey (read: you).

This makes encountering them in tight spaces, such as the infamous Haligtree section, a true nightmare:

It’s not just the Revenants’ attack patterns that make them so frustrating; it’s also their ability to stagger players regardless of their poise. As one player pointed out:

With close to 800 upvotes on this recent Reddit post showcasing the Revenant, it’s clear that theElden Ringcommunity largely agrees onthis enemy’s status as the most annoying in the game.

The Secret to Taming the Revenant

As with every seemingly impossible-to-defeat enemy inElden Ringand otherFromSoftwaretitles, the key to victory lies in something that, apparently, many players still haven’t learned to do: read. The“Note: Revenants” item in the game provides a direct hint on how to deal with these foes:“Healing powers will harm rather than mend.”

Miyazaki and his team couldn’t have been more obvious if they tried. Anything that heals will instead damage Revenants, meaning that casting the area-of-effect “Heal” incantation near them will make short work of these enemies.

And if you’re not one for incantations, summoning the Finger Maiden Therolina spirit ash will apparently“solo them for you in like 2 seconds flat.”

So, while Hidetaka Miyazaki may have created one of the most annoying non-boss enemies in gaming history with the Revenant, he also provided playerswith the tools to overcome this challenge. It just goes to show that in the world ofElden Ring—knowledge truly is power.
