One can vividly remember the ‘golden’ days when Hugh Grant would be on our TV screens, wooing women with his charming blue eyes, electric smile, and impeccable line delivery in many of his romantic films. Those were the times when ‘romance’ was still very much ‘alive’ and ‘real’, thanks to the wicked charms of actors like Grant, his ‘arch-nemesis’ Colin Firth, Matthew McConaughey, and many, many more.

Now, pretty much every actor glorifying that period has moved on, taking on widely different roles and genres. As of Grant, he has moved on to an entirely different territory. After starring as Oompa Loompa inWonka, the actor has ventured into the ‘horror’ territory, with the upcoming A24 filmHeretic.

Starring Hugh Grant as the film’s main antagonist, the reviews from the film’s screening at the Toronto Film Festival have been defining it as a ‘new start’ in the actor’s career. Releasing soon worldwide, here are all the details of the upcoming flick.

Hugh Grant’sHeretic: What is it About?

The upcoming film,Hereticis a film is a horror thriller about a mysterious man who traps two young Mormon missionaries who stumbled upon his just as strange house to spread the message of Jesus Christ. The official synopsis of the film reads (viaA24),

As seen in thetrailerof the film, the strange man invites the two young missionaries in his house, offering blueberry pie. Realizing that all is not how it seems, the two young girls try to escape through the door, only to find it locked. The man then gives them the chance to leave, but only through two doors, labeled ‘belief’ and disbelief’, based on their faith.

When they enter through the door, the young women get lost, trapped in a wooden maze, apparently built in the man’s house. A pure thrillier, impossible to know what will happen next film, it will leave you questioning religion and wondering how on earth the charming stammering man fromFour Weddings and a Funeralcan be so sinister.

Apart from the three main lead actors, the film also stars Topher Grace, Elle Young, Haylie Hansen, Hanna Huffman, Elle McKinnon, and more in unnamed roles. Directed by Beck and Woods, they are also producing the film, along with Stacey Sher, Julia Glausi, and Jeanette Volturno.

As per theA24’sHereticPress Notes, Woods revealed what made them make the film,

For a long time, Scott and I have talked about doing a movie about religion and investigating religion. Big life questions have always surrounded us, and cults were a fascination from an early age. We thought it would be cool to make something in the vein of Inherit the Wind, where religion intersects with science, or Robert Zemeckis’ Contact, melding religion with a science-fiction story.

Thus, wanting the audience to think about how religion fits into their lives, the film does leave several questions unanswered and for the audience to discover them on their own. Having an R-rating and with a runtime of 110 minutes, the film shows Hugh Grant in a new light, a Hannibal Lecter sort of soul, who would make the audience questionwhat if the gates of hell were our own beliefs?

When isHereticReleasing?

Earlier this year on June 18, 2025,Heretichad its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Among the many films premiered at the festival, the horror thriller starring Hugh Grantreceived widely positive reviews.

“Why had no one asked the public?”: The Unforgivable Mistake Hugh Grant Blames is What Doomed Chris Pine’s Dungeons & Dragons Movie

While some would describe it as a soul-ratting amalgamation of theology, horror, and creep, others would describe it as the ‘re-birth’ of Hugh Grant. A chilling film from start to end, it is as entertaining as it is horrid and might stir up quite a storm when it finally hits theatres.

Currently having a 92% rating onRotten Tomatoes, the film will be released in the United States on November 8. A perplexing flick by A24, we can’t wait for the blueberry pie and the bespectacled Mr. Reed to shock us.

Hereticwill be in theatres on July 28, 2025.
