Keisuke Itagaki did something unexpected when creatingBaki Hanma. The series took off like no other, establishing itself as one of the best sports mangas ever. The smooth display of martial arts through both the manga and the anime has fans gripped for decades now. A story that started with the protagonist wanting to become the best in his field, surpassing his own father.

Baki the Grappler

That is not an uncommon trope.Food WarsandFairy Tailboth have similar motivations. In fact, most anime likeOne Piece, Haikyuu!!andMy Hero Academiais driven by the thought of becoming the strongest in their traits. In many ways, all of them stand individually despite their similarities. One plot hole that stands inBaki Hanma, although minor, has a lot to do with Yyujiro Hanma, the protagonist’s father.

Baki Hanma’s Wandering Father

One of the most important characters ofBaki Hanmaalso happens to be the protagonist’s father and the main antagonist of the series, Yuujiro Hanma. With Baki’s goal being to defeat his father, there is a lot of focus on him. One of the biggest mysteries of the series, seeing how Yuujiro is the strongest character in the manga and a freelance assassin, is how much he earns.

He solves everything with his strength. Does he usually carry cash?He continued. I wonder if someone else is paying for him.

Yuujiro Hanma

This mystery is one that has been going on for a long time, seeing that no one can figure out just how much the mercenary even makes. However, it is clear that it must be a lot, taking into consideration how much he travels and his spending habits, and not someone who is devoid of luxury. WhenKeisuke Itagakiwas asked about the same (via theTMS Anime Official Channelon YouTube), he was met with just as much confusion.

His reply was that he too had no idea where the money came from. His expenses always seem to be taken care of but that isn’t something Itagaki was able to justify either. Being one of the biggest plot holes, the question remained unanswered.

The Noble Elder’s Funds

As he went on to speculate just how Yuujiro Hanma managed to travel and fund his entire journey, the possibility of someone else paying for him also came up. With no one knowing how and who pays for his travails, the topic of Yuujiro Hanma’s pay was a hollow shell of unanswered questions. However, there was one character who, although in jest, came to mind. Mitsunari Tokugawa who also happens to run the Underground Arena has no shortage of funds.

Despite not being a fighter himself, Mitsunari Tokugawa has always been shown to be adept in knowledge of martial arts. Not only that, but him being able to run the Underground Arena has given him an unusually large supply of currency influx.

Many have speculated for a long time that it was Tokugawa who was responsible for Yuujiro Hanma’s travels. Although a confirmation or even a rejection of the idea would make a lot of difference, Keisuke Itagaki refuses to let any information about his ambiguity slip.
