Among the Big Three, Naruto is the first to achieve his goal and complete his story as the main character of one of the biggest anime and manga series of all time. Naruto has proved that he was the perfect choice for the main character of Masashi Kishimoto’s magnum opus by doing exactly what he said at the beginning of the first chapter.

Naruto as the Seventh Hokage

However, the thing that is commendable about Naruto is that he achieved his dream without changing his nature or his personality drastically. This was revealed by Kishimoto himself during an interview. According to the manga creator, Naruto might have gotten good at understanding things, but he never changed his core personality.

Instead, it was the people around him who got to know his resolve more deeply and understood his feelings and his dreams of becoming Hokage. This comment by the mangaka about his main character is truly shocking, despite his becoming the Hokage of Konoha.

Masashi Kishimoto’s Opinion of Naruto as a Protagonist

In 2015, Kishimoto gave an interview toPublishers Weeklyduring the New York Comic Con after the release of the final volume of his magnum opus, Naruto. During the interview, when Kishimoto was asked about the change in Naruto throughout the series, the manga creator made some pretty interesting comments about him.

Kishimoto stated:

I would say he actually did most of his maturing and growing in the very first chapter of the very first volume. He really fundamentally has not changed through the series from beginning to end.

If something is different, it’s the people around him and the circumstances around him, because of course in the final chapter, he has become Hokage [the most powerful ninja], which is his dream to begin with.

According to the manga,Naruto was already a unique protagonistcompared to other Shonen main characters. Not only that, he stayed true to his fundamentals from beginning to end. However, he did manage to change people’s opinions about him and his circumstances with his hard work and his resolve.

Naruto Made Other Characters Acknowledge Him

Masashi Kishimotoalso stated that while Naruto was based on him, he had the unique ability to stay cheerful even in the toughest situations. And when Naruto remained consistent with his way of dealing with life, other characters decided to change their thinking of the character whom they once hated.

Kishimoto explained:

The biggest difference in terms of the people around him is that these are the same people who either ignored him or repudiated him in the beginning, and through the series they have come to realize what he can do, and they have finally acknowledged him and accepted him as one of their own.

Naruto may be a little idiotic compared to other characters, but this silly nature is the reason why he is so creative and unique.
