Harley Quinn – “The Mess is the Point” Recap
Harley shows off the spotless and shiny new condo, which Ivy loves because of its cleanliness. They’re about to “break in” the new apartment when they’re interrupted by a doorbell. King Shark (Ron Funchess) waits outside, revealing he’s also moved to Metropolis for his kids. The shark kids run into the condo, immediately eating everything (including the furniture).
King Shark came to drop off the kids so he could go on a date. As the kids’ Godmothers, he needs Harley and Ivy to look after them. He leaves (after warning about a peanut allergy), and Ivy quickly follows suit as she heads out to meet Lena Luther.

At the new Botany Research Center, Lena (Aisha Tyler) shows Ivy around her new facility. Lena introduces Ivy to her colleague, but it turns out to be Jason Woodrue (John Slattery) – the man who created Ivy using his experiments on her. The plants around Jason automatically attack him, and Lena chases after Ivy when she runs down the hall. Lena promises Ivy things are different despite her past with Woodrue.
At the condo, the kid sharks continue to run wild. She distracts them with a promise of phone time and locks them in a closet. Harley begs for help, coincidentally receiving a phone call from Lena simultaneously. Lucky for Harley, Lena invites Harley to bring the kids to a birthday party.

While watching Woodrue teach a class, Ivy flashes back to her past. Before she got her superpowers, Ivy took a class with Woodrue, and they had an intimate relationship. After the flashback, she approaches him when the class lets out. She tells Woodrue she can put the past behind her so they can work together. Woodrue offers her a tour, but Ivy suggests they visit the lab instead.
Harley brings the shark kids into the party, which is beautifully decorated. She thanks Lena for inviting her, who has to leave to help Humpty Dumpty. Bane (James Adomian) and Betty (Casey Wilson) approach Harley, welcoming her to the party as well. The birthday party is for their “adopted” daughter, and their family also moved to Metropolis. Bane tells Harley to join the club, but Betty expresses some skepticism. Bane points out Vincent Edge (James Adomian) – who runs the club and actively assaults an elderly woman while they’re watching him.

Ivy and Woodrue go into the lab, which far exceeds her expectations. Ivy notes she has not been in a lab in years, preceding another flashback of her relationship with Woodrue. After sleeping together in the lab, Ivy shows Woodrue a very young Frank, who is part human-part plant. She’s been infusing the soil with a human-plant DNA hybrid shot, which brought Frank to life. It also makes him immune to pesticides.
However, Woodrue sees Frank as his meal ticket to become a millionaire. He claims Ivy would never have created Frank without his help, so he deserves to take the plant. Woodrue tries to steal Frank, and when Ivy fights back, Woodrue unleashes a pesticide gas on the lab. He then locks her in, ensuring that she will die and he can claim Frank for his own. As she’s dying, Ivy takes the last syringe of her hybrid compound and injects herself, creating her powers in the process.

Harley follows Shaun (Kimberly Brooks) – the green-shirted Kid Shark – who continues to act out. When Harley pulls on his fin, he runs away into the AC ducts. Harley chases Shaun through the vents, only to fall through the ceiling of Edge’s office. She quickly pitches her case to join the club, but when she hears Shaun bite another woman, Harley jumps back into the HVAC system. Edge ponders her request.
Harley Quinn (S5) Review – A Hilarious Satire Worthy of Gotham City
In the present, Ivy uses her vines to show off her power to Woodrue. Ivy remains angry with him for all he did to her, and she becomes known as a villain because of his actions. Woodrue tries to tell her he made her more powerful, but Ivy will not give him credit. She became powerful despite his actions. Woodrue begs for his life, and Ivy agrees to give him a chance. She shatters a batch of pesticide. His skin melts away as she reminds him it’s not Pamela but Poison Ivy.
Outside the lab, Ivy gets a voicemail from Harley inviting her to the club. However, the club has become a bit of a massacre, with the kid sharks eating everyone in the pool – including the princess who lost her “waving arm” to Shaun. Bane tells Harley the princess had it coming when an animal comes into the club and starts tranquilizing the kid sharks.
Harley won’t let anyone hurt her godkids and proceeds to beat the animal control officers with pool noodles. Ivy arrives at the bloody massacre at the same time Vincent Edge walks into the room. Harley refuses to apologize for her godkids and tells Vincent off. Right as he’s about to deny her application for the club, Lena steps into the hall and reminds Vincent who owns the club. She gets them into the club despite the bloody mess.
At home, Harley asks about Ivy’s day, but Ivy sidesteps the conversation. Instead, they begin to get intimate, only to be interrupted by Shaun. As Harley chases Shaun, Ivy stares blankly at the ceiling. Back in the wreckage of the lab, a giant monster hand grabs the table to stand. On its wrist is Woodrue’s watch.

Is “The Mess is the Point” worth watching?
It’s a little surprising the story of “The Mess Is the Point” took so long forHarley Quinnto explore. While it serves as the Poison Ivy backstory, which is overdue in the show’s overarching storyline. However, if we were going to get this story, it was a wise choice to address early in the season. “The Mess is the Point” opens the door for another antagonist – Floronic Man. He should make for an actual antagonist of note for Ivy.
Meanwhile, the Harley Quinn storyline in “The Mess is the Point” is pure fun. The kid sharks, especially Shaun, are always funny. However, they elevate “The Mess Is the Point” the most in its final seven minutes, whenthe blood and gore of their chaosis clear. They’re going to make for fun side characters and chaos demons this season, and hopefully, we get more of these antics beyond “The Mess is the Point.”
Once again, Lena’s actions inHarley Quinnseem fishy. While her initial pitch opened the door for some potential good near Harley and Ivy, “The Mess is the Point” makes Lena feel far more calculated. She’s perfectly positioned herself to help both of Harley and Ivy. However, she’s also touching their deepest insecurities, especially by hiring Woodrue. Even with Harley, she’s finding ways to keep the anti-hero busy while excusing undeniably bad behavior. She’s working too hard to keep herself in their good graces, and “The Mess is the Point” solidifies her as the antagonist to watch.
Unfortunately, “The Mess is the Point” is missing Brainiac, so we’ll put a pin on that story now. However, he cannot be far away, especially given the tidbit Superman dropped in the last episode. The Automatons saw Harley and Ivy’s antics as more helpful than actually stopping them. Maybe “The Mess is the Point” serves as a double entendre for the episode title. The creation of Floronic Man might be the opening Brainiac needs to complete his plan.
Harley Quinnairs on Max, beginning on July 21, 2025. “The Mess is the Point” airs on June 05, 2025. New episodes are released every Thursday.
