Guillermo del Toro is renowned for the many masterpieces he has created. His artistic prowess has allowed a certain sense of faith that fans find themselves with because of the darker elements he is willing to tap into. As someone who has always found himself liking darker sketches and the scary side of things, exploring the gothic storylines isn’t something the director is afraid of.

Lord of the Rings franchise set to be revived by WB

TheLord of the Ringsbooks have been long over since they were published in the 1950s. Adaptations upon adaptations came and went by. Prequels and spin-offs were made and fans seemed to receive them all with great anticipation. However, one project, in particular, is yet to be looked at.

The UnfinishedLord of the RingsSequel

Back in the 1950s,J. R. R. Tolkienwasn’t completely done with theLord of the Ringsseries. Although the books had been penned down, the story wasn’t over in his mind. The author began working on a sequel novel. The idea was scrapped multiple times, with pages crumpled and left abandoned. Although, at the time, it was revisited just as much.

The novel was to be calledThe New Shadowand would have taken a much darker turn than whatLord of the Ringsfans are used to. The story takes place after the War of the Ring but also features two protagonists, an old man and a young man, Borlas and Saelon. Although there was no particular time period, the aftereffects of the war still lingered in the air.

The story focuses on the aftermath, one that left the world dealing with consequences and horrors they were not prepared for. Saelon was said to be a follower of Herumor, a rebellious Númenorean. He was to introduce Borlas to the same and then some. What happened after was not something anyone was able to explore.

Guillermo del Toro Could Helm a DarkLord of the RingsProject

The draft was written by J. R. R. Tolkien many times and scrapped just as many times until his death in 1973. What was left ofThe New Shadowwas a 13-page manuscript that fans can also read in the 12th volume ofThe History of Middle-earth,The Peoples of Middle-earth.It consists of a mixture of both his old and latest drafts mixed together in a 13-page compilation.

The story was much darker as compared to the parent series because of its focus on the horrors of war. Seeing when he was writing the manuscript, it would make sense as to why war was on his mind. Not only was a World War I veteran, but the 1950s was dealing with the dispersing fog of World War II. The story would have undoubtedly been darker than most. So who better thanGuillermo del Toroto direct such a project?

Despite having only 13 pages, a project like that could be right in the filmmaker’s forte. His aptitude for the dark and gory, as seen withHellboyandPan’s Labyrinthcombined with J. R. R. Tolkien’s genius could bring about a story unlike any other.
