TheGran Turismofranchise is officially 25 years old, andPolyphony Digitalis celebrating the huge milestone with a personal message from the studio’s CEO, Kazunori Yamauchi. In a newblog poston thePlayStationwebsite, Yamauchi confirmed the series has sold over 90 million copies since the release of the original Gran Turismo.“In the last 25 years, the cumulative sales total of the series have reached over 90 million copies as of August 11, 2025,” Yamauchi confirmed, thanking fans around the world for their support over the past 25 years in a new PlayStation blog post.READ MORE:PSVR 2 Could Possibly Appear At Sony’s CES Press ConferenceOriginally released for the PlayStation 1 in 1997, Gran Turismo was one of PlayStation’s first 1st party titles. As revealed by Yamauchi, the team behind the hit racing game originally consisted of two part-time artists and three engineers. “From there, the number of comrades have continued to increase in number for over quarter of a century, and has become Polyphony Digital today, a company with over 200 staff members.”
The latest instalment of the Gran Turismo franchise, Gran Turismo 7, was released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 bach in March. Polyphony Digital’s latest iteration of the series even recently picked up the award for best sports/racing game at The Game Awards.
If you’re an avid Gran Turismo fan, the developers are celebrating the series' 25th anniversary in style. Late last month, Polyphony Digital deployed a special25th-anniversary update for Gran Turismo 7, which included four new cars, a new track, and multiple new features. Then, just last week,update 1.27 added another five carsand two extra menus, all at no extra charge to owners.
Yamauchi ended his heartfelt message on Gran Turismo’s 25th anniversary by saying that “the ‘pursuit of beauty’ is the motivation for creating Gran Turismo. We have newfound determination to continue our progress into the future with a strong sense of purpose.”
