The showrunners ofGame of Throneshad to use a lot of creative imagination to fill in the latter seasons as the source material is not yet completed. This is why the series ended in a not-so-stellar fashion, with many arcs leaving fans unimpressed, particularly Arya Stark’s journey in Braavos.
Across Seasons 5 and 6, the young girl began her journey learning to become an assassin in hopes of avenging her family. She traversed the Narrow Sea to reach the home of the Faceless Men. While this promised an exciting storyline, it somehow ended on a disappointing note.

After arriving in the House of Black and White,Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark learned the secrets of the Faceless Men and why she needed to give up her identity in order to become someone else. This includes surrendering her personal vendettas, which proved to be a massive struggle.

In the end, even though Jaqen H’ghar finally claimed she has completed the training and truly become “no one”, Arya asserted that she will always be ‘Arya Stark of Winterfell’, eventually deciding to leave the House of Black and White and return to Westeros. With only the Waif trying to kill her at the behest of Jaqen, there was nothing else that proved to be a consequence for her departure.
The audience no longer heard from the Faceless Men after Arya left Essos, which was very disappointing. At one point, fans felt her training in Braavos was futile, save for her revenge on the House Frey.
The Braavos plot was exceedingly underdeveloped.David BenioffandDan Weisstried to explore this storyline and subsequently gave up, when inGeorge R.R. Martin’s novels, the Faceless Men plays a much larger part in the narrative.

Indeed, they missed the opportunity to dive deep into it, and knowing HBO scrapped the only chance they could fix this is even more upsetting.
Martin revealed on his personal site,Not a Blog, that aBraavosspinoff was once in the works. “One of these days I need to write that story about Braavos we were developing for HBO,” he wrote. “They shelved that one a couple of years back, alas, but that does not mean I won’t go back to it…” Martin promised.

Martin is keen on writing a book about Braavos in hopes of filling in the gaps left byGame of Thrones, which he claimed he would do once he’s finished writingThe Winds of Winter. As much as we want to get excited about this, we know the famed writer struggles to deliver the novel. He has been working on it for more than a decade now, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be published soon.
HBO needs torevive its plan for aBraavosspinoff. With the success ofHouse of the Dragonand the anticipation forA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, many are certainly looking forward to knowing more about the secrets and wonders of the free city.
