George R.R. Martin’s story ofGame of Thronesgoes all the way back in 1991. He was still involved in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, and when he got frustrated with his job, he returned to writing novels. Between May and June of the same year, he started drafting a science fiction story calledAvalon.

Amid writing this, a random scene crossed his mind, and it was so graphic that he had to put it onto paper. The author let his imagination flow until a single scene became a chapter, and later on, a book. From that lone idea came the birth of his best-selling novel series,A Song of Ice and Fire.

Game of Throneshappened after George R.R. Martin had a random gruesome thought

Writers have different ways of finding inspiration for their stories, and forGeorge R.R. Martin, the light bulb idea involved a gruesome death that had a strong impact on him and the characters finding a litter of direwolves. This seemingly random scene just happened to pop up while he was working onAvalon.

In his interview withRolling Stone, he explained the sequences that came out of nowhere and eventually unfolded as he wrote them down.

Suddenly it just came to me, this scene, from what would ultimately be the first chapter of A Game of Thrones. It’s from Bran’s viewpoint; they see a man beheaded and they find some direwolf pups in the snow. It just came to me so strongly and vividly that I knew I had to write it.

It took three days for Martin to process his thoughts and write the story clearly as what we’ve read from his first novel. During that summer, he wrote about a hundred pages and the world of Westeros built itself as he continued letting his ideas flow. He had said in the past thathe does not use outlines for his books, and this proved to be effective for Martin.

In his interview withThe Guardian, the writer revealedGame of Throneswas initially just a short story that expanded on its own. “I started exploring these families and the world started coming alive,” he said. The very idea was all in his head, and he only had to unpack them one by one.

George R.R. Martin already thought of the ending toA Song of Ice and Fire

Martin said he had been living in the world of Westeros alongside the characters for almost two decades before HBO picked up the show. He knows where the story is heading, so whetherThe Winds of Winteris similar or totally different from the series is up to the author.

He toldTimemagazine in 2017 that the events are “pretty fixed in my mind and I’m not going to change anything because of the show, or reaction to the show, or what fans think.” Much like when he started the novels, he already knows how to wrap up the story.

Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
