George Lucas envisioned the story of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader as the core of theStar Warsfranchise. The filmmaker launched the franchise’s original trilogy, with Vader as the primary villain, before telling his backstory in the prequel trilogy. Given Anakin’s status as the Chosen One, comparisons with Jesus Christ were inevitable.
During an interview, Lucas spoke about the similarities between Anakin and Jesus and the religious undertones of Anakin’s story. The filmmaker dismissed the notion that Anakin was meant to be theStar Warsequivalent of Jesus Christ. Lucas had a very simple statement that perfectly encapsulates his intentions with the character and here is what he had to say.

George Lucasdirected all three installments oftheStar Warsprequel trilogy, which explore the tragic downfall of Anakin Skywalker. InThe Phantom Menace, Lucas established that Anakin was born without a father and was prophesized to bring balance to the Force.
During aninterviewwith Barry Norman, Lucas was asked about the similarities between Anakin’s birth and Jesus Christ. However, Lucas firmly dismissed the idea that Anakin’s birth was meant to be a virgin birth on the same lines as Jesus Christ. He said:
It wasn’t really meant as a virgin birth, more as a metaphor for life.
Lucas also denied the implication that Anakin’s birth was meant to serve as the introduction of a new religion or at least religious ideas along the lines of Christianity.

Instead, Lucas explained that the circumstances of Anakin’s birth were intentionally left mysterious to mirror heroes from mythology, such as Hercules. From Lucas’ words, it is evident that Anakin wasn’t intended to be an analog of Jesus Christ but a mythological hero.

During the same interview, Lucas was also asked about the poor critical reception ofThe Phantom Menace. However, the filmmaker remarked that he was unphased by the critics blasting his movie. Moreover, Lucas admitted that the poor reviews would not make him change his plans for the prequel trilogy.
The story is already done and I want to adhere to the story. The critics I stopped listening to a long time ago and they will hate the next two just as much as they hate the last four.
Lucas made the above statement, standing firm on his stance that the critical reception of his movies wouldn’t dissuade him from telling his story, the way he wanted.

At the same time, Lucas admitted that the merchandising rights and the financial benefit from the toy and product sales were a major benefit for the franchise. However, the filmmaker revealed he did not intentionally add characters to boost merchandise sales.
