She shared a photo of hugging all the actors in the scene after wrapping it up. She shared that before the cameras started rolling, the actors in the scene knew that they were in forone of the hardest scenesin the film. Pugh described the scene as awkward, strange, and unnatural. She shared:
We all looked at each other before we started rolling and knew it would be hard. And awkward. And strange. And unnatural. We knew it wouldn’t be pleasurable. But by the end we were all in each other’s laps and crying and allowing our bodies to keep heaving.

She further shared that she wouldn’t probably put herself through another emotionally draining scene like that. She shared that while the scene turned the viewers away from the screen, it was designed to be the“most human”scene. While the audience only got to experience it for seconds, the actors went through emotional pain for hours. She shared:
I knew I would never be so open and so raw and so exhausted like I was that day ever again, I can hope at least… Scenes that make you hurt, or cringe, or turn away from the screen when watching, are scenes that were designed to make you, for ten seconds at least, the most human. But for us, it was hours. Beautiful, hard, proud hours.

Made on a small budget of $9 million, the film went on to gross $48 million (via Box Office Mojo). Aster’s direction and Pugh’s performance were the highlights of the film and received critical acclaim.

Pugh admitted that she put herself into“really sh*tty situations”to get into the character. She shared on theOff Menupodcast:
When I did it, I was so wrapped up in her and I’ve never had this ever before with any of my characters. She added,“I was putting things in my head that were getting worse and more bleak.”Pugh shared that when she next went to film Greta Gerwig’sLittle Women, she felt immense guilt because she felt that she had“left [Dani] in that field in that [emotional] state.”It appears that the filming ofMidsommarwas an overall nightmare for the actress.
