The bond between Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace inOne Pieceis one of the most heartwarming aspects of the anime. The two sworn brothers had each others’ backs since their childhood and while Ace took a long time to warm up to the younger boy, he eventually became the best elder brother to Luffy. Their protectiveness and pride for each other are unmatched. Their voice actors, Mayumi Tanaka and Toshio Furukawa, are similarly bonded and found family in each other.
A recent interview revealed that Tanaka calls Furukawa “big bro,” just like Luffy called Ace inOne Piece.The tragic events of the Marineford Arc left the voice actors as devastated as Luffy and the fans felt. Furukawa found Ace’s death scene incredibly difficult to record. This, however, made the two voice actors get closer. It just goes to show how influential and powerful the bond between Ace and Luffy was.
The Brotherly Bond of Luffy and Ace
Luffy met Ace when Monkey D. Garp put the young boy in the care of Curly Dadan, a mountain bandit, who essentially became the foster mother of the two. Ace was less friendly as a child due to his trauma of being Gol D. Roger’s secret child, and thus, he distanced himself from Luffy. He kept rejecting any advances in starting a friendship, and his only friend was Sabo.

After a dangerous turn of events and a show of loyalty from Luffy, even after being treated badly by Ace, he goes to save him.The three of them, Ace, Sabo and Luffy, became sworn brothersin asakazukiceremony, a Japanese ritual where people exchange sake cups to create a bond. However, Sabo was presumed dead after he was viciously attacked by a Celestial Dragon while running away from his abusive family. Since then, Ace and Luffy only had each other. It’s safe to say that Ace felt more responsible for Luffy than ever.
The bond between the two brothers was stronger than the bonds of blood. In the world ofOne Piece,Eiichiro Odahas established the importance of found or sworn family and there’s no better example than them. Ace kept showing off Luffy’s bounty poster any chance he got and even went as far as to find Shanks to thank him for saving the young Straw Hat. Luffy risked his life for Ace after the news of his execution became public. The brotherly love was something even fans could feel heavily, especially after Ace’s last words and the weight of Luffy’s screams.
Marineford Scarred Even The Voice Actors
After the traumatic events of Marineford, the voice actors for Luffy and Ace were significantly impacted. In a recent interview, Toshio Furukawa talks about how difficult it was to record Ace’s last words.

On the flip side, it strengthened his bond with Mayumi Tanaka, who now calls him “big bro.” It’s natural the two got into their characters for this arc in particular and felt the bond bleed into their dynamic. It just goes to showhow perfect Tanaka is for Luffyand how deeply affected everyone was by the Marineford Arc.
