Elden Ring Nightreignhas lost most of its player base on Steam since launch, and things only seem to be getting worse.

The game has been the subject of some controversy since it released two months ago, mostly focused onthe difficulty of its single-player grindandits lack of a two-player mode, being mostly intended for groups of three players.

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN Two Player Mode Duo

FromSoftware has addressed both of these issues, releasing a patch to make solo play more viable shortly after launch, and a two-player mode coming to the gamelater this week on July 30.

Unfortunately, the patch for the solo modedoesn’t seem to have helped the game’s player count in the long term, which is only continuing to drop.

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN Party of adventurers

Almost 85% Of Players Gone

When it launched, Elden Ring Nightreign saw some 313,593 concurrent players on Steam, which is still its all-time peak, and, despite a wave of negative reviews around then, its user rating has stabilized at “Very Positive,” both for all reviews and those within the last month.

Despite its strong start and solid review score, though, the game has since lost almost 85% of its player base, with the 24-hour peak at time of writing only 47,756 players (according toSteamDB), and still seems to be trending downward.

It’s likely that the launch of the duo mode in a few days will help, at least temporarily, but only time will tell if it will be able to have a long-term impact on the player count.

Elden Ring Nightreign Met With Worst FromSoft Steam Reviews Since Dark Souls 3 DLC

Elden Ring Nightreign has launched to a “Mixed” reception on Steam, which is the poorest FromSoftware reception since the Dark Souls 3 DLC.

Incidentally, the originalElden Ring, which is over three years old at this point, has a24-hour peakof 47,050 and has seemingly stabilized, occasionally jumping up a bit, but never dropping too low.

Elden Ring Nightreign

A dropping player count is never a good sign for a game that leans so heavily on its online multiplayer, even though Elden Ring Nightreign does still have a single-player mode. The duo mode will make players less reliant on randoms, though, so even if the player count never recovers, at least those who stick around will have an easier time getting into games with friends.

At least it isn’t a full live service game, so a dropping player count isn’t the death knell that it could be.
